I had never read Shakespeare until a few days ago. I feel like I've never been very fond of the so-called classics, so I never bothered to see what this author had to say in his books. That was until I came across A Midsummer Night's Dream.
I had only a vague idea that it would be a tragicomic drama—from comments I had heard—but I didn't know exactly what the plot was about. Having read it, I think it's a good introduction to Shakespeare. I will write what this magical play is about, so you maybe also get interested in it.

Warning: I will ignore some of the plot related to Titania for the review's sake

From the outset, one feels immersed in the atmosphere and customs that we have often heard about in Ancient Greece. There are early signs that the characters involved will be enveloped in both the city life customs and the dreamlike fantasy of that era. In fact, amid preparations, Egeus, Hermia's father, asks the Duke for his consent for her to marry Demetrius, whom Egeus thinks is the “best candidate” for her. But, as expected, the girl does not agree with this imposition. Instead, Hermia loves another young Athenian, Lysander. He seems to fulfill her expectations. This obviously creates discord with her father and is not easy to resolve. But there is more. To complete these chaotic love affairs, there is a fourth person, Helena, who is madly in love with Demetrius. She does not care how much he rejects her; her love is so great that she resists any offense he says to her. So while those two live their ups and downs on the outskirts of the city, the lovers Hermia and Lysander decide to escape into the woods to evade their father's ruling and fury. This prompts Oberon to send an elf named Puck to fetch a flower that will enchant Demetrius with love for Helena. In a comical accident, this little elf confuses Demetrius with Lysander in the middle of the night and the thick forest because of their Athenian clothing. Consequently, Lysander finds himself in love with Helena, against all odds. But Helena does not take kindly to this. On the contrary, she considers it even more offensive than what Demetrius has already done to her because she sees Lysander's new intentions as a mockery of both her and her friend Hermia. Some time later, these four characters around whom the play revolves find themselves in a heated argument where they blame each other for their flaws and romantic “decisions.” Such intensity does not go unnoticed by Oberon, who realizes that Puck has botched his mission. Finally, all this accidental disaster, caused by such a small creature, comes to an end when Oberon sends him to reverse the previous effect. Thus, the characters return to their previous condition, as if they had “woken up from a dream,” and attend a play that Theseus has arranged for all the guests at his wedding.

Nunca había leído a Shakespeare hasta hace poco. Siento que nunca he sido muy afín a los llamados clásicos, así que nunca me preocupé por ver qué exponía este autor en sus libros. Esto fue hasta que me topé con Sueño de una noche de verano.
Apenas tenía una vaga noción de que sería un drama de tipo tragicómico—por comentarios que oí—pero no sabía exactamente de qué iba la trama. Una vez leído, pienso que es una buena lectura inicial a Shakespeare. A continuación comentaré de que va este teatro mágico.

Desde un principio uno se siente impregnado del ambiente y costumbres que regularmente nos han contado de la Antigua Grecia. Se ven sombras incipientes de que los personajes involucrados estarán envueltos tanto de las formas citadinas como de la fantasía onírica de esa época. De hecho, en medio de los preparativos, Egeo, que es padre de Hermia, solicita consentimiento del duque para que ella se case con Demetrio, quien Egeo piensa es el "mejor candidato" para ella. Pero, como era de esperarse, la chica no está de acuerdo con esta imposición. En cambio, Hermia ama a otro joven ateniense, Lisandro. Él sí parece llenar sus expectativas. Esto evidentemente genera discordia con su padre y no es de fácil de resolución. Pero hay más. Para completar estos caóticos vínculos amorosos, hay una cuarta persona, Elena, quién está perdidamente enamorada de Demetrio. A ella no le ha de importar cuánto él la rechaza, su amor es tan grande que ella resiste cualquier desprecio que él le hace. Entonces mientras aquellos dos viven su vaivén a las afueras de la ciudad, por otra parte deciden los enamorados Hermia y Lisandro escapar entre los bosques para evadir el dictamen y la furia de su padre. Esto hace que Oberón mande a un duende llamado Puck a por una flor que permita el encantamiento de Demetrio por Elena. Como accidente cómico, este duendecillo llega a confundir, en medio de la noche y espesura arbórea, a Demetrio por Lisandro debido a sus vestiduras atenienses. Consecuentemente, Lisandro se ve enamorado, contra todo pronóstico, de Elena. Pero Elena no ve con buenos ojos esto. Al contrario, lo considera aún más ofensivo que lo que ya le ha hecho Demetrio porque ve en las nuevas intenciones de Lisandro una burla tanto para ella, como para su amiga Hermia. Tiempo después estos cuatro personajes sobre los cuales orbita la obra se ven en una discusión acalorada donde se achacan sus defectos y "errores" amorosos entre ellos. Tal intensidad no paso por alto para Oberón, quien se da cuenta de que Puck hizo mal su misión. Finalmente, todo este desastre accidental, causado por una criatura tan pequeña, viene a parar cuando él mismo es enviado por Oberón a revertir el efecto anterior. Así los personajes vuelven a su condición previa, como si hubiesen "despertado de un sueño", y asisten a un obra de teatro que ha dispuesto Teseo para todos los invitados a su boda.
