Many people claim that tragedies cause the best works of fiction, in literature and cinema. And among human tragedies, war and everything it entails is one of the most devastating, especially if, as in the case of the Second World War, it is accompanied by a massive and systematized genocide, because not only soldiers are killed on the battle front but also ends the lives of thousands of civilians in concentration camps, gas chambers and crematoriums. >Muchas personas aseguran que las tragedias provocan las mejores obras de ficción, en la literatura y el cine. Y dentro de las tragedias humanas, la guerra y todo lo que conlleva es una de las más devastadoras, sobre todo si, como en el caso de la segunda guerra mundial, se acompaña de un genocidio masivo y sistematizado, porque no sólo se matan soldados en el frente de batalla sino que también se acaba con la vida de miles de civiles en los campos de concentración, las cámaras de gas y los hornos crematorios.

At this point in the game and in history, the horror of the concentration camps is known to everyone (or almost everyone) because we've read the books by Primo Levi, Imre Kertész and Elie Wiesel, we've seen _Schindler's List_, _The Pianist_, _The Boy in the Striped Pajamas_, _Sophie's Choice_, _In Darkness_ and the beautiful and tragicomic _La vita è bella_, among many other films and documentaries that have come out on the subject, but in 1948 the depth of the nightmare that was the Holocaust was still unknown. In 1947, Romanian doctor Olga Lengyel published _Five Chimneys_, one of the first first-hand testimonies written by a survivor of Auschwitz, the most infamous concentration camp of all. And a year later, in 1948, the Polish film director Wanda Jakubowska released _**Ostatni etap**_, known in English as _**The Last Stage**_, one of the earliest cinematographic references to what the horror of Auschwitz was. This film is often referred to as _the mother of all Holocaust films_, not only because of the time in which it was released - just three years after the camp was liberated - but because the director herself and her co-writer Gerda Schneider were Auschwitz survivors. A menudo, esta película es referida como _la madre de todas las películas sobre el holocausto_, no sólo por el momento en que se estrenó - apenas tres años después de liberado el campo - sino porque la propia directora y su co-guionista Gerda Schneider, eran sobrevivientes de Auschwitz. No lo vieron en ningún documental como nosotros, ellas lo vivieron en carne propia y eso - conjuntamente con otros aspectos de la realización del film - hace que la narración resulte más auténtica.

Some actresses and members of the location design team lived that experience; Some German prisoners of war were used as extras, as were some soldiers of the Red Army (Russians) and as if that were not enough, the film was filmed in the concentration camp itself, for which Jakubowska had to reconstruct some parts and the filming crew occupied the SS barracks during filming. >Además de la dupla creadora, otros miembros del staff también eran sobrevivientes de los campos. Algunas actrices y miembros del equipo de diseño de locaciones vivieron esa experiencia; algunos prisioneros de guerra alemanes fueron empleados como extras, igual que algunos soldados del Ejército Rojo (Rusos) y por si fuera poco la película fue filmada en el mismísimo campo de concentración, para lo cual Jakubowska tuvo que reconstruir algunas partes y el equipo de filmación ocupó los cuarteles de las SS durante el rodaje.

Can you have a more authentic experience? If there are those who feel physically unwell when visiting Auschwitz due to the emotional burden it entails, imagine how complex it was for these people to film that story. Although it was similar to an exorcism and was a way to have_closure_ a disastrous episode in their lives, it must not have been easy to return to the place where they were so miserable, but the commitment to telling this story was greater. This truth, kept secret for so long, had to be shown to the world and it had to be done to prevent it from happening again. Within that framework, the story is a classic Auschwitz story: Jewish prisoners, homosexuals, gypsies, forced to work, under meager food, regardless of whether it was summer or winter, beaten and tortured to death or until they were led away to the gas chambers in which they died at the hands of Zyklon B before being cremated as if they were industrial waste. You also see hospitals in the countryside, doctors and nurses committed to saving the lives of the sick they cared for despite not having the appropriate resources. Did it make sense to cure a sick person and return her to work in the camp? How did they find the strength to save lives that were doomed to end shortly afterwards? There are many small stories contained in the film that move us to compassion and reflection. >¿Se puede tener una experiencia más auténtica? Si hay quienes al visitar Auschwitz se sienten físicamente indispuestos por la carga emocional que conlleva, imaginen lo complejo que fue para estas personas filmar esa película. Si bien resultaba similar a un exorcismo y era una forma de _cerrar_ un episodio nefasto en sus vidas, no debió ser fácil volver al lugar en el que fueron tan miserables, pero el compromiso de contar esta historia era mayor. Había que mostrar al mundo esta verdad mantenida en secreto durante tanto tiempo y había que hacerlo para evitar que sucediera de nuevo. Dentro de ese marco, la historia es una clásica historia de Auschwitz: prisioneros judíos, homosexuales, gitanos, obligados a trabajos forzados, bajo una alimentación exigua, sin importar si era verano o invierno, golpeados y torturados hasta la muerte o hasta que eran conducidos a las cámaras de gas en las cuales morían a manos del Zyklon B antes de ser cremados como si se tratase de un desecho industrial. Se ven también los hospitales en el campo, doctoras y enfermeras comprometidas a salvar la vida de los enfermos que atendían a pesar de no contar con los recursos apropiados, ¿tenía sentido curar a un enfermo para devolverlo a trabajar en el campo? ¿cómo sacaban fuerzas para salvar vidas que estaban condenadas a terminar poco tiempo después? Son muchas las pequeñas historias contenidas en la película que mueven a la compasión y a la reflexión.

That is, a prisoner who did some of the Nazis' tasks such as forcing others to work, _punish_ the bad behavior of the prisoners (but the Kapo was also a prisoner!) in exchange for some comforts. In other words, the Kapos were traitors, but are there limits to what one can do for survival? Scarcity of food, medicine, clothing, space, extreme weather conditions, attempts at rebellion, ingenious ways of communicating with the resistance and being aware of what was happening beyond the walls of the camps, love relationships, duels, losses, the film focuses on what it was like to survive (or die) in Auschwitz (and places like it). There are no scenes of war, invasions, anything foreign to the camp. In fact, the first scene shows the train arriving at the camp and passing through the gates of that man-made hell that in another of its entrances still maintains one of the most infamous inscriptions in history _Arbeit macht frei ("Work liberates")_

>Vemos también la figura de los Kapos, prisioneros a quienes encomendaban labores de vigilancia o de administración dentro del campo. Es decir, un prisionero que hacía algunas de las tareas de los nazis como obligar a los demás a trabajar, _castigar_ el mal comportamiento de los prisioneros (¡pero si el Kapo también era un prisionero!) a cambio de algunas comodidades. En otras palabras, los Kapos eran traidores, pero ¿acaso hay límites para lo que uno puede hacer a cambio de la supervivencia? Escasez de alimentos, de medicinas, de ropa, de espacio, condiciones climáticas extremas, intentos de rebelión, ingeniosas formas de comunicarse con la resistencia y de estar enterados de lo que sucedía más allá de las paredes de los campos, relaciones amorosas, duelos, pérdidas, la película se centra en lo que fue sobrevivir (o morir) en Auschwitz (y lugares semejantes). No hay escenas de la guerra, las invasiones, nada ajeno al campo. De hecho, la primera escena muestra al tren llegando al campo y atravesando las puertas de ese infierno creado por el hombre que en otro de sus accesos aún mantiene una de las inscripciones más infamemente célebres de la historia _Arbeit macht frei («El trabajo libera»)_.

After some reviews by Film Polski, the film was released and went around the world, garnering awards and nominations, but above all, revealing a truth that was still unknown to many. In 1939 approximately 3,300,000 Jews lived in Poland. At the end of the war, a little less than 400,000 remained alive. We are talking about almost 90% of the population exterminated and tens of thousands of them died in Auschwitz. Polish people lost a total of around four to six million of their inhabitants in those years and that gives more value to this story conceived and filmed in Poland by Polish women witnesses of such a terrible episode in the history of humanity. _**Ostatni etap**_ is an invaluable piece in world cinematography and portrays with honesty, but at the same time with dignity, the life of the prisoners of Auschwitz, in a way so direct and so real that it's difficult to compare it with the other films on the subject, had any of you heard about this film? have you seen it? >Jakubowska supo que haría esa película en cuanto pisó del campo de concentración y apenas fue liberada comenzó a trabajar en un guión con el que viajó a Rusia y se reunió con representantes del cine ruso que incluso obtuvieron la aprobación de Joseph Stalin. Después de algunas revisiones de Film Polski la película fue estrenada y le dio la vuelta al mundo cosechando premios y nominaciones, pero sobre todo, revelando una verdad que aún era desconocida para muchos. En 1939 vivían en Polonia aproximadamente 3.300.000 judíos. Al terminar la guerra, quedaban con vida un poco menos de 400.000. Estamos hablando de casi un 90% de la población exterminada y decenas de miles de ellos murieron en Auschwitz. Los polacos perdieron en total alrededor de entre cuatro y seis millones de sus habitantes en esos años y eso le da más valor a esta historia concebida y filmada en Polonia por mujeres polacas testigos de tan terrible episodio en la historia de la humanidad. _**Ostatni etap**_ es una pieza ivaluable dentro de la cinematografía mundial y retrata con honestidad, pero a la vez con dignidad, la vida de los prisioneros de Auschwitz, de una forma tan directa y tan real que es díficil compararla con las demás películas sobre el tema, ¿alguno de ustedes había oído sobre esta cinta? ¿la han visto?
