Canserbero: La vida que mis hijos me enseñaron a imaginar

No fui yo quien descubrió a Canserbero, fueron mis hijos. Juan David, el menor de ellos, lo escuchaba a toda hora, al punto de que llegué a pensar que se estaba obsesionando. Jorge David, el mayor, con más paciencia, me explicó quién era aquel muchacho de voz grave que parecía hablarle a toda una generación. Así, entre conversaciones de sobremesa, canciones compartidas en el carro y debates que no siempre entendía, me fui acercando a Tirone José González Orama. Lo que sigue no nació solo de mi pluma, sino de lo que aprendí de ellos, mis hijos, que me ayudaron a construir esta vida inventada.

En nuestra versión, Tirone no murió en 2015. Aquella madrugada oscura de Valencia no se convirtió en epitafio, sino en punto de inflexión. Un amigo, un hermano quizás, que vio el fuego en sus ojos y le dijo: —Tirone, no lo hagas hoy. Mañana tienes que grabar esa canción. La del niño que quiere ser astronauta y termina siendo poeta. La necesitamos. —

Y Tirone, gracias a Dios, escuchó. Y esa decisión cambió todo.

Durante los dos años siguientes se retiró de los escenarios. Lo imaginamos en Mérida, refugiado en las montañas, leyendo a Jung y Galeano, escribiendo frases en libretas escolares. Fue un tiempo de silencio fértil, donde su rabia se transformó en más que pensamientos.

En 2017 reapareció con un disco que, en nuestra imaginación, no buscaba el mercado, sino la memoria. Lo llamamos Vida II: El regreso del hombre que miró el abismo. No fue un éxito en ventas, pero sí un terremoto cultural. Sus canciones, cargadas de crítica y ternura, acompañaron a una generación que no encontraba respuestas en los políticos ni en las iglesias.

A partir de ahí, su camino se ensanchó. No se limitó al rap: fundó la Escuela de Palabra Viva, un proyecto que llevó talleres de música y escritura a barrios, cárceles y universidades de todo el continente. Allí enseñó que rimar era mucho más que entretener: era un acto de resistencia, un modo de sobrevivir con dignidad.

En 2021 sorprendió con una obra de teatro, La mente es un país en guerra, donde bailarines y músicos encarnaban los conflictos internos de una crisis existencial. La crítica lo celebró como un creador total. Dos años después, en 2023, publicó su primera novela: Dios no tiene Twitter (pero yo sí), sátira de una espiritualidad perdida en la era digital. Se convirtió en best-seller y lo consagró como escritor.

Para 2024, su nombre ya sonaba en las listas del Nobel de Literatura. Él, fiel a su estilo, respondió con un rap breve y punzante titulado: El Nobel no se rapea (pero la verdad sí). Ese gesto lo definía: irreverente, pero comprometido.

Hoy, en 2025, a veces lo imagino caminando por el malecón de La Habana, con barba canosa y gorra de lana, un cuaderno en el bolsillo y un walkman que todavía guarda cintas. Esa visión se me aparece como un sueño recurrente, aunque en verdad sus pasos resuenan en Barlovento, donde vive en una casa sencilla rodeada de perros rescatados y vecinos a quienes invita a degustar arepas acompañadas con una sopa de pollo cada domingo. Allí, con los pies firmes en su tierra, cultiva la vida humilde que siempre defendió, mientras en su mente vuela hacia otras ciudades que lo reclaman.

Lo que empezó como curiosidad de mis hijos terminó por enseñarme algo esencial: Canserbero no murió aquella noche. Sigue vivo en cada joven que lo escucha para no rendirse, en cada padre que aprende de sus hijos a entenderlo. Y al escribir esta vida inventada, siento que lo hemos rescatado juntos, como familia, para que su voz no deje de resonar.

Canserbero: The life my children taught me to imagine

It wasn’t me who discovered Canserbero, it was my children. Juan David, the younger one, listened to him all the time, to the point where I thought he was becoming obsessed. Jorge David, the older one, with more patience, explained to me who that deep-voiced young man was, the one who seemed to speak to an entire generation. So, between after-dinner conversations, songs shared in the car, and debates I didn’t always understand, I began to approach Tirone José González Orama. What follows didn’t come from my pen alone, but from what I learned from them, my children, who helped me build this imagined life.

In our version, Tirone didn’t die in 2015. That dark dawn in Valencia didn’t become an epitaph, but a turning point. A friend, maybe a brother, who saw the fire in his eyes told him: —Tirone, don’t do it today. Tomorrow you have to record that song. The one about the boy who wanted to be an astronaut and ended up a poet. We need it. —

And Tirone, thank God, listened. And that decision changed everything.

For the next two years, he withdrew from the stage. We imagined him in Mérida, sheltered in the mountains, reading Jung and Galeano, writing phrases in school notebooks. It was a time of fertile silence, where his rage transformed into more than just thoughts.

In 2017, he reappeared with an album that, in our imagination, wasn’t aimed at the market, but at memory. We called it Life II: The return of the man who stared into the abyss. It wasn’t a commercial success, but it was a cultural earthquake. His songs, filled with critique and tenderness, accompanied a generation that found no answers in politicians or churches.

From then on, his path widened. He didn’t limit himself to rap: he founded the School of Living Word, a project that brought music and writing workshops to neighborhoods, prisons, and universities across the continent. There he taught that rhyming was much more than entertainment: it was an act of resistance, a way to survive with dignity.

In 2021, he surprised everyone with a play, The Mind is a Country at War, where dancers and musicians embodied the internal conflicts of an existential crisis. Critics celebrated him as a total creator. Two years later, in 2023, he published his first novel: God Doesn’t Have Twitter (but I do), a satire on spirituality lost in the digital age. It became a best-seller and established him as a writer.

By 2024, his name was already being mentioned on Nobel Prize in Literature lists. True to his style, he responded with a brief and sharp rap titled: The Nobel can’t be rapped (but the truth can). That gesture defined him: irreverent, yet committed.

Today, in 2025, I sometimes imagine him walking along Havana’s Malecón, with a gray beard and a wool cap, a notebook in his pocket, and a walkman still carrying tapes. That vision comes to me as a recurring dream, although in truth his steps echo in Barlovento, where he lives in a simple house surrounded by rescued dogs and neighbors he invites every Sunday to enjoy arepas with chicken soup. There, with his feet grounded in his land, he cultivates the humble life he always defended, while in his mind he flies to other cities that call for him.

What began as my children’s curiosity ended up teaching me something essential: Canserbero didn’t die that night. He lives on in every young person who listens to him to not give up, in every parent who learns from their children to understand him. And by writing this imagined life, I feel we have rescued him together, as a family, so that his voice never stops resonating.
