Living at home with the grandparents has its ups and downs. On the positive side our kids grow up surrounded with love, for us parents is easier in a way because if we need to go out unexpectedly we can rest assured that they stay at home well taken care of, and on occasion we can delegate some responsibilities if needed.

I am a single mom, I used to live in another country and now that I am back I am at my parents house and as of right now I don't have the resources to move somewhere else. It's been a huge blessing counting on them because without them I honestly don't know what I would have done. That is why that my whole life won't be enough to thank them for what they have done for us, and for the love they have for my baby girl.

Vivir en casa con los abuelos tiene sus aspectos positivos y negativos. Por un lado nuestros hijos crecen rodeados de amor, a los padres se nos hace un poco más suave la carga ya que a la hora de salir de manera imprevista podemos estar con la tranquilidad de que se quedan en casa bien cuidados, y en ocasiones podemos delegar una que otra responsabilidad.

Soy madre soltera, vivía en otro país y ahora que he regresado me encuentro en la casa de mis padres y de momento no tengo los recursos económicos para mudarme a otro lugar. Ha Sido sin duda una enorme bendición en contar con ellos pues de no ser así la verdad no se que sería de mi. Es por eso que no me alcanzará la vida para agradecer lo que han hecho por nosotras y el gran amor que le tienen a mi hija.

From the moment we become parents it becomes inevitable having to deal with third parties opinions, opinions that can be very annoying. And living with the grandparents means we can't really escape from that matter.

One of the things that annoy me is being unauthorized in front of my daughter. Sometimes I correct her from doing something and my mom takes her by the hand saying that I am mean.

During my daughter's first year we lived in another country, and it was just the two of us for a big chunk of the day. So it wasn't hard to raise her my way and creating healthy habits. I didn't give her sugar, salt, processed food... But it all went down hill. Grandparents tend to spoil by nature, so they're constantly giving her candy and cookies behind my back and now there's a growing list of things she now refuses to eat.

Desde que somos padres se vuelve inevitable tener que lidiar con opiniones de terceras personas, opiniones que pueden llegar a ser molestas. Y viviendo con los abuelos realmente no hay escapatoria a tener que escucharlas.

Una de las cosas que me molesta increíblemente es que me desautoricen en frente de mi hija. A veces la reprendo por algo y mi madre la toma en brazos a mimarla y decirle que soy mala por llamarle la atención.

Durante el primer año de mi hija vivíamos en otro país, y éramos solo nosotras dos gran parte del día. Así que no era difícil criarla a mi manera y crear en ella hábitos alimenticios sanos. No le daba azúcares, sal, alimentos procesados... Pero todo ha ido en picada. Los abuelos son consentidores por naturaleza, así que constantemente le están dando dulces y galletas a mis espaldas y ahora hay un sin fin de alimentos que se rehúsa a comer.

I was raised under the Catholic tradition, I call it tradition because my family doesn't really go to church, so I do not practice said religion. I have my own beliefs so I haven't baptized my girl. Catholics baptize their kids as soon as they are born, so I have been dealing with a bunch of relatives asking when am I gonna baptize her. And it is not something I planned at all.

However I gave in for tradition's sake and because I started to get excited about having one of my best friends as my daughter's godmother. But now my parents are giving their opinion on my choice of dress, and inviting relatives that my daughter doesn't even know, and that are not part of her life, and that even I have not seen in decades. It is getting out of my budget, besides some of them are that kind of people that only criticize whenever they attend to a family reunion. I have beef avoiding some of them because I don't want to be in a toxic environment.

Fui criada bajo la tradición de la religión católica, me refiero a ello como tradición porque mi familia no es que acuda a misa con regularidad, así que no soy practicante de la religión. Tengo mis propias creencias así que no he bautizado a mi hija. En el catolicismo se acostumbra bautizar a los niños apenas nacen, así que he tenido que lidiar con muchos familiares preguntando cuando pienso bautizar a mi hija. Y en realidad no era algo que tenía planeado en absoluto.

Sin embargo di mi brazo a torcer en nombre de la tradición, y pues que empezó a hacerme ilusión de que una de mis mejores amigas sea madrina de mi pequeña. Pero ahora mis padres están opinando en mi elección del vestido, y hasta invitando a familiares lejanos que mi hija NO conoce, que no son parte de su vida, o que ni siquiera yo he visto en décadas. Y se sale totalmente de mi presupuesto, aparte de que algunos son personas que simplemente van a criticar todo pues así es en cada reunión familiar a la que asisten. Yo misma me he alejado de algunos miembros de la familia precisamente porque no quiero permanecer en un círculo tóxico.

Many times I prefer not to say anything because this is not my home, and I don't want to sound ungrateful. I love them, and I really appreciate what they do by taking us in, but it can really be overwhelming, besides I feel like I am not being respected in my role as a mother, as if I have no right to have an opinion about raising my own daughter. I am frustrated because I can't go anywhere else, and it is not in my possibilities and y feel like I just have to put up with it without saying a word.

Muchas veces me privo de decir algo porque se que esta no es mi casa, y no quiero sonar malagradecida. Los amo, y de verdad agradezco lo que han hecho al recibirnos aquí, pero puede ser agotador, aparte de que siento que no me respetan en mi rol de madre, como si no tuviera derecho a opinar con respecto a mi propia hija. Me frustra no poder irme a otro lugar, y es que no está en mis posibilidades y siento que me toca soportar la situación sin derecho a réplica.
