Greetings to everyone in the Worldmappin community! Today I'm joining you to share a new tourism review. This time we're in Valencia and its iconic Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Socorro, which I've mentioned before in other posts but where I've never been able to show you the interior of the cathedral. So today I can finally do so, and I'm very pleased because I had been waiting for the moment when I would find the cathedral doors open so I could go in, take pictures, and talk about it. That moment came, and I didn't waste a minute in making it happen.

I should mention that on this occasion, I will not delve too deeply into the history of the cathedral, as there is already an article where I detail the cathedral's beginnings as a temple in the 16th century, its architecture, its developments over time, and more in the link. That said, let's begin.

¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Worldmappin! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes una nueva reseña de turismo. En esta oportunidad nos localizamos en Valencia y en su emblemática Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Socorro, de la cual por cierto, he hablado anteriormente en otras publicaciones pero dónde nunca antes había podido enseñarles el interior de la catedral. Así que hoy por fin puedo hacerlo y eso me complace bastante ya que había aguardado el momento en el que encontrara las puertas abiertas de la catedral para poder ingresar y registrar las imágenes y hablar sobre ello. Así sucedió y no perdí ni un minuto para hacerlo realidad.

Debo decir que en esta ocasión no voy a profundizar demasiado en la historia de la catedral pues para ello ya existe este artículo dónde detallo los inicios de la catedral cómo templo en el siglo XVI, su arquitectura, sus avances a través del tiempo y demás en el link de abajo. Dicho esto, comencemos.

Today, Saturday, I went with my mom to do one of our favorite things: visit downtown. In other words, we had to visit the historic center of Valencia. We walked around several places, strolling and chatting, but when we realized that the cathedral was open, we went in right away. The baptism of some little ones had just ended. The interior of the cathedral stands out for its remarkable ornamentation, architecture, and layout. It is impossible not to look up when you enter, to observe the tall Corinthian columns and pause to admire the design on the cathedral ceiling, along with the stained glass windows around it and a couple of other finishes that begin but do not end anywhere.

It is understood that it was during the time of Monsignor Gregorio Adam (when he obtained permission to rebuild the old temple and create a larger building) that he commissioned architect Alejandro Colina to design it. He was responsible for the design of the building and ended up creating several naves, towers, new chapels, and extensions (especially those of the Virgin of Socorro, the Virgin of Coromoto, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus). Alejandro Colina also added artistic value with the inclusion of paintings, sculptures, stained glass windows, altarpieces, and lamps. Some of the artists commissioned for this work were Antonio Herrera Toro, Pedro Castillo, and Juan Antonio Michelena. So, thanks to Colina, we have the building and the works that we can enjoy today. In addition, it has effectively withstood the passage of time thanks to the materials used.

Hoy sábado me embarque con mi mamá a una de nuestras cosas favoritas: visitar el centro. En otras palabras, debíamos visitar el casco histórico de Valencia. Recorrimos varios lugares, paseando y charlando, pero cuando nos dimos cuenta de que estaba abierta la catedral, entramos de inmediato. Había acabado el bautizo de algunos pequeños. El interior de la catedral resalta a la vista por su destacada ornamentación, arquitectura y disposición de la misma. Es inevitable entrar y alzar la mirada para poder observar las altas columnas de estilo corintio y detenerse plenamente a detallar el diseño que se ha hecho en el techo de la catedral, junto a los vitrales que se encuentran alrededor y otro par de acabados que inician pero no terminan en algún lugar.

Se tiene entendido que fue en los tiempos del monseñor Gregorio Adam (cuando este consiguió el permiso para reconstruir el antiguo templo y crear un edificio más amplio), quién le encargó al arquitecto Alejandro Colina el diseño de la misma. Él se encargó del diseño de dicho edificio y terminó creando varias naves, torres, nuevas capillas y ampliaciones (en especial la de la Virgen del Socorro, la Virgen de Coromoto y el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús). Además Alejandro Colina le añadió un valor artístico con la inclusión de pinturas, esculturas, vitrales, retablos y lámparas. Algunos de los artistas encargados de esa labor fueron Antonio Herrera Toro, Pedro Castillo y Juan Antonio Michelena. Así que gracias a Colina, tenemos el edificio y las obras que podemos disfrutar hoy en día. Además de que ha resistido efectivamente el paso del tiempo gracias a los materiales utilizados.

Of course, in 2015, architect Sara de Atiénzar and restorer Fernando De Tovar were responsible for restoring the building and its works to good condition after a period of neglect. The cathedral is not only important because it is the seat of the Patron Saint of Valencia, but also for its spiritual and artistic value, as well as its historical significance, since it is thanks to the faith of many believers that this place exists today. It is also the resting place of figures such as Atanasio Girardot and Fernando Peñalver, as well as the respective bishops. Catholic iconography will always be of interest to anyone who has the sensitivity to recognize and admire its virtues, whether or not they are religious or spiritual in nature. Claro que en el año 2015, la arquitecta Sara de Atiénzar y el restaurador Fernando De Tovar, fueron los encargados de volver a poner en buen estado el edificio y sus obras luego de un período de cierto abandono. La catedral no solo es importante por ser la sede de la Patrona de Valencia, su valor espiritual y artístico, sino también histórico pues gracias a ese movimiento de fe por parte de varios creyentes existe hoy en día dicha lugar. También reposan algunos personajes cómo Atanasio Girardot y Fernando Peñalver, además de los respectivos obispos. La iconografía católica siempre será motivo de interés para todo aquel que tenga la sensibilidad para reconocer y admirar sus bondades. Sea o no sea de índole religioso o espiritual. Finalmente amigos míos, espero que hayan disfrutado tanto cómo yo de este recorrido por el interior de la catedral. He dejado algunas imágenes de la Plaza Bolívar donde me despido junto a mi madre.
