After sleeping at Facenda Esperanca farm an early 6.45am start to rush out and see yesterday’s coffee picked from the fields being processed.
The coffee is emptied into a large concrete container with a water channel running along the centre, the coffee cherries are pulled along the water Channel and into a large tiled bath area - here they collect and as the bath fills with water the light already dried on the bush cherries float - while the heavy red cherries sink. Eventually the bath height reaches the point it Empties into a bee channel - and the light floating dry cherries travel down this to be spread out on the drying beds. These coffee beans ferment in the dry shell, and when the correct moisture level is reached will be processed.
The heavy fresher cherries are emptied from the bottom straight into a machine that removes the outer cherry shell and separates it from the coffee beans. The coffee beans then wash into a new bath where they will left to ferment for a short time before being dried on the beds.
We then went to see the nursery where seedling coffee plants are being nurtured ready to create a brand new plantation. The seedlings pictured were planted November 2018 and will be ready to plant out in the plantation in November 2019. There are 150000 seedlings and they will be planted over 25 Hectares, they are the Catcuai variety of Arabica coffee.
We then visited the processing facility of Cooperativa Agropecuaria De Campos Altos LTDA where all the local coffee farmers will bring there coffee to be processed, graded and packed into sacks ready for sale.
Finally it was time to leave this region and travel 5 hours drive away to Monte Alegre Farm .
The second half of this day was spent on a 5 hour ride in the minibus to a new coffee growing region so we can visit a new plantation.
