Walk Around Roald Dahl Country, Great Missenden, UK

Introduction

Since we finished school 14 years ago, I have always tried to keep in contact with my old school friends and over the last few years, we have made our way through a book called "Pub Walks in the Chilterns" and currently tucking in to "50 walks in Berks and Bucks".

As we're in the thick of Winter with the days being short and weather being generally bad, we didn't have much time to waste today as we embarked on a 4.25 mile (6.8km) walk, which took us through the village of Great Missenden, where world renowned children's book author Roald Dahl lived from 1954 to 1990. Let's see what's what shall we?

Roald Dahl Country

A few facts from the book as I read them to my friends revealed that Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916, served in the RAF in WWII, with his first book being published in 1942 about wartime adventures.

Children's Books

Later the next year, his first children's book called The Gremlins was published but it wasn't until 1954 when he moved to Great Missenden and stayed until he died in 1990.

The Angling Spring Wood was an inspiration for my favourite book of his called The Fantastic Mr Fox and Atkins Wood provided him with the desire to write Danny the Champion of the World.

Other Classic Dahl Titles

If you don't recognise any of the titles here, you need to correct that! Roald Dahl has also been behind the classics like James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, The Twits and The BFG.

He also contributed to screen plays for the Ian Fleming novels Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (the Childcatcher character) and You Only Live Twice.

So with these awesome facts in mind and divulged to my friends, they requested an audio book version of it, narrated by yours truly... Maybe another time. Let's head to the high street and maybe some familiar territory for those if you read Danny the Champion of the World.

Roald Dahl Museum

On the Great Missenden High Street, along with the Red Pump Garage and No. 70 Crown House, you have the Roald Dahl Museum which had fun for all the family along with walking trails for children to enter a wonderland of fun. As it says on the front of the building...

Resting Place

On this walk, you are taken to Roald Dahl's resting place at the Church of St Peter and Paul. We were greeted by a pretty cool looking building as we crossed the bridge over the main road.

The Church of St Peter and Paul where Roald Dahl is buried

We had a look inside the church as there were Christmas events going on where people set up stalls with Christmas trees and festive related treats for all to enjoy this weekend. After stepping inside, I have to say, I am starting to feel a little bit of the magic of Christmas again after today.
