Festivities Continue
Christmas is great isn't it? A time to be with family, time away from work for most in the UK and a chance to eat as much as possible.
Then of course in the days after, you need to burn those calories off (well, I feel the need to anyway 😛). So join me today as we make our way over to the Potters Arms pub via the Chiltern Way and back in a 6 mile walk.
Chiltern Way, Penn
If you've been following my recent walks, you may have seen a post or two about the fields at the back of the Penn & Tylers Green Sports Club. The way to the Potters Arms requires us to go a little bit further past the fields and join the Chiltern Way, a circular route that takes you around some of the beautiful scenery of the Chilterns (at least until the [insert rude word here] HS2 folks plough a train line through in the next decade).
Making our ascent to the top of this hill provided a lovely view with the low lying Sun providing a gentle touch of heat in the Winter sky.

Split Decision
As we entered Penn Woods from a different angle, we were presented with a decision where the path splits. Do we go left and follow the arrows? Or do we risk it and go through the slightly muddier, unmarked path? Come on, you already know the answer to that!

Long and Short of It
Heading left where the arrow points would be a shorter route but we always go that way, so let's go through towards the right, I know there's a great view up there and it will burn a few extra calories (plus a few extra steps 😉).

Once we emerged from that woodland, the view in the photo above greeted us and we traversed the field to get to the footpath in the photo below. As you can see, it's a little narrow but thankfully someone cut back all the branches and stinging nettles which reside there over the warmer months! Nothing was going to stop us getting to the Potters Arms now!

Our Biggest Obstacle
That path was nothing though as once we made it a little bit further down, we had this slight problem of a closed, padlocked gate stopping us...

Poppycock! Words ushered by Dad, "Sod it, we'll climb over that" set the tone for the next 30 seconds. So we did climb over without hesitation, promptly turning left up the road where we were greeted by the prize itself.

The Potters Arms
There she is ladies and gents! The glorious Potters Arms in Winchmore Hill. Over the last 18 months or so, it has really developed its reputation in the village for providing a great comedy night on Thursdays with some big names as well from BBC programmes like Mock the Week and Britain's Got Talent. Check the lineup on their website if you are going before hand to see if you wanted to have a laugh!
What I also like about it is the chilled out atmosphere in there and the very traditional, cosy feeling of the interior. Made even more cosy by the Christmas decorations. Lovely.

But most of all, the food in there is damn good I have to say, with generous portion sizes to leave you getting value for money and a well fed belly, fit to give any punter the food baby and coma of a life time!
There are also a fine selection of ales at the bar, supporting local breweries and offering their unique flavours so if you really want a traditional English pub and are in the Winchmore Hill area, well worth checking out The Potters Arms!
For us though, we needed to head home before the sun light went so no food baby or comas at this visit!
Return Leg
Well, we knew the challenge ahead of us of getting back home (another 3 miles/5km) and our own stomachs were rumbling so we took a slightly different route back but maintained on the Chiltern Way to get us back through. Just opposite the Potters Arms, there's a quaint little footpath that leads us back across the fields - look for this little sign...

Once you follow this path and cross the road, you can merrily walk on over to the Penn Estate, which I have covered a bit more in a previous post and explore the surrounding fields near Common Wood Lane, which is where I will leave you as I must dash, it's time for my own recovery feast now haha! For now, enjoy the remaining scenery and catch you on the next walk!
