Learning how to set S.M.A.[R].T. GOALS could be the difference between achieving or failing to reach your goals. Setting S.M.A.[R].T. GOALS is smart because most people don’t plan to fail... they simply fail to plan.
Have you ever had someone tell you, “Oh come on! You can’t be serious! Get real! You can never do that!”?
When 77% of what you hear out their is from a negative bent it is only to easy to be persuaded to heed this voice of self doubt. Ignoring these types of comments can be difficult to do because listening to them is the easy way. If you believe the unsupportive or unbelieving words people (often people who should know better!) then you don’t have to ask those difficult questions. It’s much quicker and easier to stick to the beaten path than to attempt a new path to self-discovery!
But, I would say, being selective in which voices have permission to prompt and speak into your life is imperative to success. It is what we listen too that shapes our beliefs about ourselves and what is possible.
This is important to consider as we discuss what the letter [R] stands for in the acronym S.M.A.[R].T.
[R] stands for “realistic”.
Are your goals realistic and who determines what is and isn’t possible?
Another thing to consider here is weather you have accomplished extremely difficult objectives before... this will act as a base of experience as you determine what is and isn’t realistic for you personally. Obviously this factor in setting effective goals is a highly personal one. Only you know beyond a shadow of a doubt what is possible for you... no one else can tell you this.
This is the sort of wisdom that comes with time and experience and it is why not just anyone can tell you what is and isn’t realistic or possible for you.
To be honest... when I’m working with my personal training clients, setting their health and fitness goals, I don’t really encourage them to dial back their goals. I want them to ramp them up in such a significant way so as to prompt them to action. Their goals have absolutely got to be something that moves (figuratively and physically) and inspires them. I have found that boring, unexciting, goals produce boring unexciting results so I would rather error on the side of someone thinking a goal is unrealistic than attempt to dial back the objective.
Being realistic should be used as a tool to inject excitement into your health and fitness activities rather than to disempower and dull down your goals.
The point of setting S.M.A.[R].T. GOALS is not to dull down your ambition but to sharpen it to a keen edge. Enough so that you become highly motivated to stick your foot out of your warm bed in the morning and go out on a health and fitness adventure!
Goals that do not motivate you are going to be small and insignificant. These end up disempowering rather than empowering you so it’s far better, in my books, to amplify and excite your health and fitness objectives... as long as you don’t trigger overwhelm... then the chances of procrastination will only mount!
