The one thing Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho learned from his late father Felix
Man Utd news takes a look at the Portuguese's relationship with his father following his passing
What was the moment that changed Jose Mourinho's life?
Failing to make the grade as a footballer? Sir Bobby Robson needing an interpreter at Sporting Lisbon in 1992? That dash along the Old Trafford touchline in 2003?
Perhaps it was the Christmas of 1984 which left the most telling mark on the Portuguese.
It was on December 25 when Mourinho's late father, Felix, was sacked in his second spell as Rio Ave manager - just seven months after leading the club to the Portuguese Cup final.
Mourinho Jr never forgot that phone call and it shaped his own managerial career when he made the breakthrough at Benfica in 2000.
Having led his side to an impressive 3-0 win over bitter rivals Sporting Lisbon, Mourinho demanded a new contract after just three months in the job.
It was not about money; he wanted a gesture of faith from the board amid rumours the new president, Manuel Vilarinho, would appoint fans' favourite Toni at the end of the season.
Few rookie managers would be so bold but when his request was turned down, Mourinho walked. After just 11 matches.
And Roger Spry, who worked alongside the Mourinhos at Vitoria Setubal between 1986 and 1988, believes that experience served Mourinho Jr well.
"That gave Jose strength," he told MEN Sport.
