EU calls for humane treatment of Rohingyas

A high-level conference on the Rohingya refugee crisis will begin in Geneva on Monday.

At the conference, the international community is expected to respond to and address this major refugee crisis.

The European Union, a co-host of the conference, is “encouraging all donors to contribute to a successful conference”, according to an EU news release issued in Dhaka on Sunday.

Kuwait is the other co-host of the conference which is being organised in partnership with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The conference is being held in the wake of arrival of almost 600,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled Myanmar persecution since 25 August.

More than one donor agencies have meanwhile called for pledging and disbursing enhanced funding to meet the rising costs of relief operations for Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

“It is an important moment to demonstrate solidarity, common approaches and a strong humanitarian face of the international community to meet the needs of the many people that have fled their homes," EU commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management Christos Stylianides said.

The release mentioned that the EU “continues, as a matter of priority, to directly address the situation with the Myanmar authorities.”
