Sometimes I just get an idea into my head and have to see it through till the end even though there are many times along the way that I should ask myself Why. This video is one such idea.
For those who saw my last post about The first breakfast sand sculpture this post has nothing, and everything to do with it.
Back in the early days of sculpting, before I had a son and adult life i had so much energy that aswell as working on a sculpture I had time in the evening to pursue one of my other loves of film making. Being in a foreign country and surrounded by other creative people I would get the group together and try and make some short movies.
This Song by Doris Day stuck in my head and I decided to make a fan music video of it. Converting our hotel room into a makeshift film set we set to work.
Anique Kuizenga, the star of the piece is very photogenic and was up for the challenge of doing a karaoke. There were lots of experiments I wanted to do while filming to get different effects like playing the music at double speed so that when played back to visuals would be a mix for interesting movements.
I think it took two evenings to shoot the whole thing and what I was left with was 30 something takes of the entire song.
When our sculpture was finished and I returned home i hadn't got a clue how to edit the whole thing together. Choosing one take over the other was difficult as they all had something I liked so I wanted to use everything.
My solution was to putting all the clips into a 3D space using Aftereffects and then go in with a camera and re-shoot the movie virtually, focusing in on my favourite elements. Cameron would copy my technique years later when he shot Avatar. Don't mention it James, I know the checks in the mail.
i am happy with the way it worked out. I learned alot while making it and for me that was one of my many reasons for doing the whole thing. It is nice to be able to share it with all involved and it's a good memory of how we all were way back when.
I know I don't own the copyright for the music but if Doris Day ever joins Steem i will split any rewards it get with her.
I also include the Youtube version on my Channel The Mantelpiece as they sometimes disappear on Dtube.
