Asian countries are so colorful. As I grew up and lived in Japan, I saw many different colors everywhere. If you visit Japan, especially in the big city, sometimes you might feel dizzy because of the colors.
When I worked for young students as a teacher, I noticed they always wore very colorful clothes and brought colorful stuff in their bags. If I asked their favorite color, almost all young children said, they love ‘Rainbows.’ This is very interesting.
When I think about it, I realize we have such a unique ancient history of color. We have a special word for deep red called ‘Beni’ or for indigo blue called ‘Ai iro’. Actually, we have four different types of chinese (kanji) characters which are 青、靑、蒼、碧 for‘blue’. Speaking of ‘blue’, the Japanese language has an interesting expression about traffic lights. We say, traffic lights turn ‘blue’ instead of saying ‘green’ even though the color of traffic lights is actually ‘green.’ There are many opinions for the reason but we have some examples. We say ‘blue leaves’ for vegetables that have green leaves since ancient times. Also, we express young fresh plants as ‘blueish green’ which means verdant green. In ancient times in Japan, colors were based on four colors which are red, blue, black and white. In the expression of “Ao Ni Yoshi” (from “Man’yoshu - The Anthology of Myriad Leaves”), ‘Ao (blue)’ means “fresh green leaves,” ‘Ni’ expresses about the “red pole of a temple.” There are different theories though which express the contrast of these colors. So, we have a habit to use expressions about ‘green’ as ‘blue’ since a long time ago.
アジアの国々はとても色彩豊かです。日本で生まれ育った私は、あちらこちらで様々な色合いを目にしました。もし日本を訪れたら、特に大きな街ではその色に目眩がするかもしれません。
講師として幼い生徒を受け持っていた時、子供たちはいつもとてもカラフルな服を着て、バックの中にはカラフルな持ち物が入っていました。好きな色を聞くと、ほとんどの学齢の低い子供達は「虹色」が大好きだと答えました。とても面白いです。
色のことを考えると、私たちには色にまつわるとてもユニークな古代の歴史があることに気がつきました。濃い赤色は「紅」、インディゴブルーは「藍色」という特別な言葉があります。実に、「あお」には青・靑・蒼・碧と四種類もの漢字があります。「青」と言えば、私たちには信号にまつわるとても興味深い話がありますね。信号機の色が「緑」であるにも関わらず、信号が「緑」に変わるとは言わずに「青」に変わると言います。理由は諸説ありますが、いくつかの例があります。私たちは昔から菜っ葉のことを「青菜」と言います。それに、新緑を「青々とした緑」と言います。古代日本の色は赤・青・黒・白を基調としていました。例えば万葉集の「あをによし」という枕詞の表現では、「あを」は木々の新緑を、「に（丹）」は寺社の朱色の柱を指し、色の対比を示しているという説があります（他の説もありますが）。私たちは、古来から「緑」を「青」と表現する習慣があるのですね。
