Happy Belated Canada Day Everyone!
Yesterday was July 1st or Canada day. 152 years ago, a bunch of future Canadians wrote down some kind words and asked Britain if they could become independent. Thankfully the British agreed without much of an argument or a fight. The biggest reason Britain probably agreed was that they supported the south in the American Civil war and after that war, the Americans may have come up here and kicked some British butt. It was thought that the USA would be less likely to fight an independent nation; Canada was just trees and beaver pelts after all. Today, we celebrate the anniversary of our nation with fireworks, BBQs, and beers!
If you are in Toronto on July 1st, the best place to watch fireworks is near Ashbridges Bay at the Woodbine beach. There is an impressive display of a few hundred supernova-like fireworks with a little flair thrown in lasting about 15 minutes. It's awe-inspiring to watch especially when you're close up. It probably costs at least a hundred grand for this show and is well worth the trip to the beaches.
We were too busy staring to take more pictures, it was a great show and tens of thousands came out for it. Traffic getting out there was crazy so it was a lot of walking, at least 15k. I haven't been to this particular show for over a decade and will definitely be coming back. Some people love going up to the cottage over Canada Day weekend-I don't particularly enjoy that this time of year because of the bugs. If you have ever been to the Canadian woods in June or early July, you will know what I'm talking about, the air is thick with all sorts of blood-sucking creatures. I prefer to go up there in August, September, and October when there are fewer bugs and the lake is warmer.
Barbeques, beer, and golf is a must for me over the Canada Day Long-Weekend. It's all about spending time with your friends and family! I know our neighbours to the south will be celebrating American Independence in a couple of days and I wish you all a good one!
