Chess lessons for beginners on steemit continues! Today I will cover another basic checkmating technique - checkmating with the viciously powerful queen! This checkmating pattern is just a bit more difficult than the ladder checkmate with two rooks I covered last week.
Alright, here we go! This is a fairly common situation after a hard fought game. You have a queen and king versus your opponent's lone king. How do you give checkmate?
Similar to the two rook checkmate, your task is to build walls! Keep restricting your opponent's king to a smaller and smaller area until he is in a tiny little 2 square cage. Then you will move your king up to help deliver checkmate!
Start building the wall! Take away as much territory from your opponent as possible.
Wherever your opponent's king goes, keep making the cage a bit smaller, by bringing the walls in closer and closer.
Keep using your queen as a cage builder! Bring the walls in, just be careful not to lose your queen!
The black king is really starting to feel the squeeze now!
You've got him right where you want him. Just be careful...
Oh no, don't give stalemate. If you take away all of the king's moves without delivering checkmate, it's a draw. A tie. You don't want a tie, right? You want the black king's head on a platter!
OK, back to this position. Remember this. You've got the king in a 2 square cage. This allows him to move back and forth until you can bring your king up to assist with the checkmate!
Queen Checkmate Quiz!
OK, you have arrived to where you can now checkmate your opponent's king! There are no less than 4 different ways to deliver checkmate here.
Describe the 4 moves that give checkmate in the comments! Remember, be careful not to give a stalemate!
