Hong Kong protests cripple airport for second day
"At least three men were mobbed inside the airport by protesters. They were said to be holding identity cards showing they were police officers from mainland China.
But the editor of China's Global Times newspaper said one of those attacked was one of his reporters who was merely doing his job."
--- Hmm, so does that mean that GT reporters are actually undercover police? With the reporting of GT, I wouldn't be too surprised.
The problem is the actual presence of undercover police & agents provocateurs. This leads to paranoia & greater aggressivity. (Which again plays into the hands of the hardliners in Beijing.)
"The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, urged authorities to exercise restraint during protests - amid criticism of the police response."
--- Now, that's new. A few years ago such a statement about HK authorities would have been quite extraordinary. Nowadays, though, ...
Hong Kong riot police clash with airport protesters
"At one point, unarmed demonstrators cornered an armed officer who had forced a woman to the ground, grabbed his baton off him and beat him with it until he drew a pistol"
--- He probably got what he deserved, his very own me-too moment. But, again, violence by the protesters is not the answer. That will only work against them.
"Medical staff at more than a dozen public hospitals staged a sit-in on Tuesday against police tactics"
--- The only ones which have not yet protested is the police themselves, it seems.
"Late on Monday, two Chinese state media outlets ran videos showing armoured personnel carriers purportedly driving to Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong."
--- Could be just another intimidation attempt. But with those crazy Tiananmen fans in Beijing, you never know. For them, after all, terrorism is when you disrespect Chinese "national symbols", not when you kill your own people.
Hong Kong leader warns protesters not to push city into 'abyss'
""When will you accept political responsibility to end citizens' fear?... When will you be willing to step down? When will you tell the police to stop?" Hong Kong's public broadcaster, RTHK, reportedly asked."
--- Even her own public broadcaster turns against her?
Anyway, she seems to be stuck between a rock & a hard place. I'm afraid, she will share the fate of Zhao Ziyang.
Hong Kong Shows the Flaws in China’s Zero-Sum Worldview
"“They generally don’t have a sense that they need to engage in self-reflection. They tend to blame the outside world.”"
--- Of course they do. The CCP is sacred, the only true religion with an infallible emperor Xi on top. There is absolutely no reason for self-reflection.
Trump delays some tariffs on Chinese imports
"US President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters, said that the delay was in part to avoid hitting US shoppers this Christmas."
--- Oh, a christmas present. How nice. But why, if the US customers wouldn't be hit by these tariffs, anyway? Aren't the Chinese paying the price?
How far will China go to support Pakistan's position on Kashmir?
"There will be diplomatic posturing from both sides, but any major fallout is unlikely"
--- At the moment, Taiwan & HK have precedence, anyway. But, if Taiwan should fall one day, you can expect a new Chinese focus on territory in the Himalaya.
One Child Nation: looking back at China's horrifying policy
"In a sense, Wang took the one child policy for granted in a negative capacity, just as her parents had taken it for granted as a way of life."
--- Don't know where she hails from, but at least in Southern China it was not quite like that. When I was teaching in Shaoguan, most of my students had siblings.
Study: All major Chinese cities capable of generating solar power more cheaply than grid
"They also found that 22 percent of those cities could also produce electricity at a lesser cost than possible with coal."
--- Don't really get that. Most electricity (the grid) in China is from coal, so how can it be cheaper than the grid in 100% of the cases, but only in 22% when it comes to coal alone. Does nuclear energy make the grid so much more expensive?

Einbrechende Verkaufszahlen: Huawei spürt US-Sanktionen in Europa
