Surviving the Crackdown in Xinjiang
"Han residents of Kuytun often called Kazakhs and Uyghurs “ethnic persons,” as if their specific culture made no difference
[...] Some people, believing that “barbarians” lived in Xinjiang, expressed surprise that she spoke Mandarin fluently."
--- Pretty well shows the attitude towards minorities in China: They are barbarians who need to be civilised by superior Han-Chinese culture. & their traditions only serve as entertainment for tourists.
"Given the scope of China’s global power, it seems likely that only a severe and coördinated international response would have significant impact. Swiftness also matters."
--- True. But sadly you have still a lot of idiots asking for appeasement. Latest example in the Guardian:
Sanctions only escalate tensions. It's time to tackle the Uyghurs' plight differently
"International outrage at China’s policies of incarceration and social coercion in Xinjiang continues to grow."
--- ctrl+f for genocide: zero results.
"Washington provocatively declares that its “defence” interests extend all the way up to China’s coastline"
--- Yes, how dare they to stand up for freedom of navigation. Worse yet, they support their regional allies Taiwan, Japan & South Korea. Such imperialism!
"the dichotomy that frames this debate – China as best friend or mortal enemy – is not helpful"
--- Yeah, what is genocide actually? Come to think of it, if it is not committed by European (-adjacent) powers, it's not so bad. Right?
"China today sees itself as engaged in the same “global war on terror” that the west embarked on in the wake of that attack.Western governments don’t go anywhere near China’s lengths, of course, but their policies reflect the same Islamophobic principle that situates Muslims along a “pathway to radicalisation”"
--- Obviously. It's all the West's fault. The CCP would have never had the idea of genoc... er ... the policy of incarceration if some idiotic US president had not declared a war on terror. China clearly has no agency at all, it just follows Western examples.
"The west’s complicity in China’s crimes is to its shame"
--- Shame on me for being a Westerner.
"Australia – which has led the anti-China drive that the UK is joining"
--- Ah, yes, that racist anti-Chinese demand for an independent (!, the nerve!) investigation into Covid origins was totally uncalled for.
"David Brophy is a senior lecturer in modern Chinese history at the University of Sydney."
--- & sadly he's not the only 'sinologist' with such an attitude.
Opinion: Lithuania's challenge to China is risky, but clever
"Lithuania's demonstrative rejection of its engagement with Beijing, coupled with its intention to seek trade relations with Taiwan, is an extraordinarily bold move for an EU country"
--- Bold, maybe. But reasonable.
"Such a stance frequently raises eyebrows, especially in the EU. "Why is a small middle-income EU country so keen to challenge giants like Russia and China?""
--- Because Lithuania learned a proper lesson from history:
"Respect is the main political currency in dealing with authoritarian regimes. If you want to be respected - stand your ground and be prepared for sacrifices."
--- Will the EU (& esp. Germany) ever learn this lesson?
China Adopts Kremlin's 'Information War' Tactics
"Chinese propagandists are focusing on the problems of racial injustice and income inequality in the U.S. and Western Europe
[...] Beijing's strategy is more confrontational and seeks to turn the tables on the West, copying the tactics of the Kremlin"
--- & with some success in certain mostly far-left & far-right circles in the West.
China pledges to ensure crude steel output falls as aims to cut carbon
"China says it had cut 150 million tonnes of capacity and 140 million tonnes low-grade steel in the last five years. However, its annual crude steel output has set a record for four straight years and hit 1.065 billion tonnes in 2020."
--- & now consider emperor Xi's pledge for China to become zero-carbon by 2060.
Taiwan's army 'ill-prepared' for potential Chinese attack
"Taiwan's 170,000-strong army is comparable with that of Germany, which boasts three and a half times as many inhabitants
[...] "The Bundeswehr at least knows about where to start fixing the problem,""
--- Not sure about that. In Germany, they know about a problem & then start discussing it. & while they are still discussing the previous problem, a new one shows up, which also needs discussing. A.s.o. Before they actually solved the first problem (after ages of discussion), a multitude of new problems appeared, & usually the solution to the 1st problem is already obsolete.
China sends aircraft carrier strike group near Okinawa in message to U.S. and Japan
"China sent an aircraft carrier and five escort ships, including a destroyer likened to the U.S. Navy’s Aegis-class vessels, through the Miyako Strait near Okinawa"
--- Hmm, so, according to the CCP narrative, which sees US freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea as provocative, this has to be considered a provocation to Japan?
How China saved more than 20,000 Jews in World War 2
"In 1941, Japan seized Shanghai. Acting under instruction from the Nazis, Japanese troops rounded up all of the city's Jews and confined them in Tilanqiao. Shanghai's Jewish ghetto had been born"
--- Another example of BBC Travel writing nonsense. Japan conquered Shanghai in 1937 & only left the International Settlement untouched. Which is where, I suspect, most of the Jews were living in the 1st place. So, it's quite a stretch to say that China saved them. (It's even more hypocritical when the CCP makes that claim, when they at the same time say that the International Settlement was a colonialist venture & they fought colonialism.)

Chinas Imagekampagne gegen schlechte PR
