Spring! This is a time of the year of many firsts! First flowers, first trees to bloom, first compost shovel!
We do the most slow and lazy compost in the world. But it's very easy and doesn't take any effort. We just pile all our kitchen scraps and garden weeds and residue that cannot be used for mulch.
We usually don't clean our garden in autumn, we just chop and drop everything and cover with straw and in the spring we remove all the remaining plants and fork the beds. What we remove from the beds gets in the compost. So spring is the most compost filling season for us!
After two years, we start using an old pile. We take out a few buckets and let it dry a bit and then sieve it a bit. The larger pieces we put in the new compost pile as a starter. The fine compost we use for growing seedlings. The medium fraction we use as mulch for fruit trees and bushes.
That is the sieved compost in the bucket, it's very fine and great to work with, also has a great earth smell to it!
