Bringing together the @Qurator Monday Mission and today’s #FreeWrite Prompt I come up with the topic of “A Day In The Life Of A Circus Dog” ... this should make for an interesting post 😅

My days, never the same but never much different either. Been on the road for many years, so long I have forgotten where the journey began. Everywhere seems familiar but not enough that I feel compelled to venture away from my carnie family. The only thing I am ever certain of is my home is now with the animal truck.

Today we arrive at a new destination, boss drove all through the night while we slept. Arriving on location boss needed a rest, I paw at the door and he lets me out. Looking back to make quick eye contact he knows what I want to say “Don’t worry boss I’m well rested and now on patrol!” His eye contact confirms understanding as he shuts and locks the door behind me.

I don’t know where in this world I came from but I know what is needed of me here! The animals become restless as the sun rises and need a calm domineering presence, we are good friends but they know not to cross me for I am just the mouth piece of bosses hand. The boss when woken from sleep is rather unpleasant even to me and it’s known I will alert him taking the brunt of his wrath if anyone gets out of line... he doesn’t mean to hurt me, none of the other animals know of our relationship behind closed doors..

Quickly dawn turns to morning then to afternoon where I have stayed with the animals waiting for boss to wake. It’s a good gig, some of the animals enjoy my company while others know they are the reason for my presence. When it is time for their act in the show boss will seemingly appear from one of the tents to relieve me of my duties with a “alright circus dog” ... only he calls me that and always before I can see him!

Opening the door of the truck to let me sleep he will always have a meal waiting, something from the shops he has snuck away with not wanting anyone to know it’s for me. “That’s my circus dog” he will say with a long gentle pat of my back while rolling down a window and staying with me while I eat. He knows meal time is the one time I feel nervous of my surroundings so like I am a watch dog for the animals he watches over me while I enjoy my hard earned meal.

Boss shuts the door so I take his seat and as always he smiles at me while shutting door, nearly the only time anyone will see it and I know it’s all for me. “Four To The Floor” he says each day as locking the truck, crunching his face back up into a sneer, giving me a pat on the head and quickly heading off to do his duties.

A day in the life of a circus dog is pretty darn easy if you ask me but things get more interesting when day turns to night. Boss says he sleeps soundly since rescuing me and bringing me on board, little does he know so does everyone else knowing each night boss’s loyal circus dog is on patrol.
