Largest Japanese E-commerce Business Partners With Country’s Biggest Railway Firm

Rakuten, Japan’s Amazon has recently partnered with the East Japan Railway Company (JR EAST) to promote cashless payment.

With the said partnership commuters will be able to charge and use their rechargeable smart fare card dubbed as JR East’s Suica using the Rakuten Payment mobile application.

The integration will bring cashless transport payments via the mobile app to commuters at 5,00o train stations and approximately 50,000 buses as well as 600,000 stores across the country.

Interestingly the Rakuten payments app could potentially facilitate support for cryptocurrencies as revealed in the company’s 2018 earnings release last February.

The integration of crypto payments into Rakuten’s payment app should not come as a surprise since Rakuten announced a revision to its corporate restructure setting up a new payments subsidiary that includes its new cryptocurrency business- Rakuten Wallet.

Rakuten wallet is a cryptocurrency exchange that has recently receive regulatory approval from Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) in March.
