European football giant Benfica has recently revealed that they will be accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum payments which means fans of the Portuguese Primera Liga champions can pay for match tickets and club merchandise using cryptocurrency.
While this development is not the first one that relates to cryptocurrencies this is the first the time it will be accepted as regular payment.
In the past Italian champions Juventus toyed around the idea of launching its own digital token.
During the 2018 World Cup in Russia Football supporters were able to pay for match access with bitcoin, but it must be noted that it was allowed during the said event and a onetime thing.
The said payment option was made possible through UTRUST, a crypto payments processing firm which also utilizes its own ETH-based token, UTK.
According to their press release UTRUST’s core technology will allow Benfica to take advantage of the increase security and convenience of cryptocurrency payments while protecting the club from market volatility.
