$5 Billion Tether Out Of Thin Air

Critics and those who do not really understand blockchain and cryptocurrencies often argue that digital assets are nothing more but human contracts that are made out of thin air and with no intrinsic value.

Money of them especially those who do not understand how these digital assets are minted often times believe that anyone with certain amount of knowledge could easily create their own money out of nothing.

Of course this is not true, as there are mechanisms, regulations, markets places and communities that will determine the use-case, conformity, value and acceptance of these digital assets.

However making digital assets out of thin air apparently happened when Poloniex was conducting a USDT chain swap with the help of Tether where in an incorrect amount of USDT was accidentally minted.

The team was supposed to mint only around $50 Million USDT but due to human error they accidentally minted $5 billion which was subsequently rectified by burning the excess digital token by passing it to an unrecoverable address.
