I came across this post on Reddit really cemented the fact that crypto exchanges don't owe you a damn thing.
This person was trying so hard to get his money from Poloniex that he was willing to pay $1,000 for anyone's help to get him in touch with a support rep. He eventually paid a few people who responded quickly to his call for help. They didn't do anything but offer some advice and he was happy to pay them $1,000 because he was so desperate and unable to get any support.
Now I know Poloniex sucks, and I don't actually use them myself, but that is not the point. Most crypto exchanges offer no form of support, no contact information, and no guarantee on transfers. You are at their mercy, they are not a bank with federal regulations, FICO protection, or even some form of auditing. They usually don't even have a brick and mortar building with employees or phone number.
Every time you transfer money to or from an exchange dealing with crypto you have to trust that they will honor that transaction especially when you go in and out using crypto.
There is no much you can do about this, it is the way the game is played right now. One thing you can do is avoid leaving large amounts of money in your account unless you are actively trading. If your crypto is in a wallet where you do not own the keys, you do not own the crypto. Get in, do what you need to do, and get out.
There are some situations where you have some protection, for example, Coinbase is FICO insured for USD wallets. They also have an individual policy if they get hacked. This won't protect you if your account gets breached or you mess up but they do offer some protection. In general, though most people agree Coinbase sucks. You purchase a lot of coins and transfer them out immediately they tend to freeze your account, among other things.
Just keep this in mind as you play with the crypto market. Be safe, and make a killing!
