Modern Times With Spock

If you've got a soft spot for science-fiction like me, you have probably picked up on all the criticisms the popular sf franchises have been receiving from their fan-bases online.

The amazing thing is the discrepancy between the fans ratings and the opinions of the professional media; if it's Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters or Doctor Who, all the current day versions receive raving approval ratings from the mainstream media, while their traditional fan-bases are disappointed time after time again. All the mentioned franchises have been heavily "politicized" as identity policies have been introduced to our entertainment. I wish people would take this discussion outside of the left-right paradigm, but there's no doubt all these franchises suffer from SJW propaganda.

But that's not the only thing that's changed through the years of course; everything always changes, change is one of the few constants in life. A constant in Star Trek has always been Spock, originally played by Leonard Nimoy in the sixties and seventies. The whole crew under William Shatner's James T. Kirk and the Enterprise itself were constants too, but Spock was the steadiest rock of them all, never upset, afraid or in panic, always a true professional, never letting emotions win over logic, even when all other crew-members were in a turmoil. It will come as no surprise that in the new show, Star Trek: Discovery, many old time fans were skeptical about Spock's return and were worried that yet another of their all-time favorite characters would be assassinated.

Actually that was managed in the first season already: we learned that Spock suddenly has a stepsister who grew up to become one of the most unlikable main characters in any TV-show ever; Star Trek: Discovery's Michael Burnham. Somehow, in all the decades we've known Spock, he never mentioned her, nor did anyone else. To be honest, I've only seen two episodes from season 1 and only the first episode of season 2, which was freely released on YouTube by CBS All Access, so maybe I'm not the most qualified to really give a well founded opinion of the series, but what I've seen doesn't compel me to see any more of it.

I found this short video with an excerpt from an interview with Leonard Nimoy, in which he discusses how he invented the famous Vulcan nerve pinch, and the general attitude he and the crew had toward the use of violence in the show. And that's then contrasted with modern Spock... I loved it. Here, see for yourself, it's only two minutes, and in my eyes perfectly captures the profound changes in only five decades:
