10 Camping Places in Iran

We've been cycling through Iran for 60 days now and almost every week we find ourselves camping in a different environment. If you're a big fan of nature camping, Iran is a big country offering plenty of great locations to freedom camp.

Our list will contain the GPS location of where we camped and the closest city (where appropriate).

1. Mazdavand

We came up to a service station looking for fresh bread at the shops and it turned out the mosque behind allows camping. A very nice place with toilet and drinking water. We pitched on white marble tiles, very fancy camping indeed.

2. Bojnurd

37.500556, 57.185833
We arrived quite late at this camp spot so didn't see the view until the next morning. The most easy place for us to camp is usually beside the highways, where there's enough flat land, it's good enough for us!

3. Besh Evili

37.381637, 55.702517
Originally for picnicking, we stayed late in the night and camped here without any trouble. Sadly there was rubbish left by everyone.

4. Marzan Abad

36.421891, 51.281284
We found a nice forest just off the main road. After setting camp and getting ready to sleep, several locals came over to warn us about wild animals. They keep telling us it's not safe because of dangerous animals. We had no problems the entire night.

5. Dizin

36.056012, 51.407976
The ride up to this camp spot was so quiet due to a closure over the pass. We stayed just for a night amongst the snow and it was cold. We had a campfire and made a Christmas tree out of snow.

6. Isfahan

33.109332, 51.625271
We cycled over this pass the entire day and had to camp on it. Vast plains of desert made it easy to camp. We hid behind a dirt mound to get some sound cover from the road. It'll be a cold night!

7. Kharshoogi Castle

32.19842, 53.191147
The place was abandoned so we had it all to ourselves. We camped and slept at the castle in absolute peace even though it got windy outside. We highly recommend visiting this castle and exploring it yourself.

8. Yazd

31.372306, 54.755864
It was full moon so we took a picture to show how well lit outside was. It was another cold night in the desert where our water bottles froze. We're finding the dirt mounds provide excellent sound-proofing!

9. Rafsanjan

30.301415, 56.300703
This region is very dry so outside of towns and cities we can camp almost anywhere in the desert. The road is long, the plain is flat, but sometimes the view from inside our tent can be very beautiful.

10. Pole Zangoole

36.196652, 51.338000
Special Mention: Technically we didn't camp. We approached the workers at the Red Crescent asking to camp at their ground however they insisted we sleep inside instead. It was so warm inside we were glad we didn't refused. It's become a "trade secret" amongst tour cyclists to visit the Red Crescent centers if the condition is very unsuitable to camp.
