So many people use disposable coffee cups made of either wax covered cardboard, or worse yet, Styrofoam (closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam), every day they go to work. Many people also buy individual 20 oz bottles of water, soda, and/or juice each working day as well, all in the name of "convenience".
Tell me, what is convenient about spending more money that you have to work for, while simultaneously damaging the environment you live in? The simple truth is that it is anything but convenient to live this way, but people have grown so accustomed to these terrible habits, that they have become desensitized to just how damaging their unnecessary waste actually is.
Most people that live this way operate with the mentality that what they do is too small a factor in the grand scheme of things, to cause any kind of real effect. Since many people operate this way however, it in fact creates a huge negative environmental impact collectively.
Autumn is the only time of year I consume coffee, since during trim season in the cannabis community, a good night's sleep is hard to come by. I do not drink coffee during other seasons however, since consuming this caffeine source too often with little sleep, causes me to have mood swings.
That is why I have invested in an old school Thermos brand 1 quart insulated coffee container. Back in the day, these type of thermos' were lined with thick glass, which is what the hot liquid actually touches (glass is the healthiest container material to drink from and store liquid). Mine was manufactured in 1974, and has a thick insulated stainless steel barrier. I acquired this used, with its original packaging on Ebay for about $20 USD. Using this for my coffee each day avoids me using tons of material that is bad for the environment, and greatly reduces my daily carbon footprint.
I also managed to acquire a glass water container that is protected by a webbed rubber sleeve. Using this glass container to hold my water for work each day also helps me avoid purchasing individual plastic bottles of water. Even if you buy those plastic bottles and recycle them, you could still be damaging the environment since the recycling of plastic creates more pollution than it prevents.
I hope this Earth Deeds post has inspired all of you to take action and start carrying reusable liquid containers to work. There are plenty of good used ones out there as well, and reusing pre-owned items will reduce your environmental impact even further.
