8 Things Not To Say To An Artist Or Crafter

I’ll just get my friend to make me one of those.
You know what you should make …
Do I get a price break if I buy two?
I can make that myself.
Why does it cost so much?
Will you donate your artwork to our event? We can’t pay you, but it will be great exposure.
My nine-year-old makes this kind of stuff too.
I can buy that at the Supermarket for $3.99.

This may sound like a joke, but it is not. Artists and crafters make their living from their works. Their works are their pride. By buying their works, you show that you appreciate their talent and creativity. It is an insult to them if you uttered any of the above.

Show your support by buying their works, if you like them. No doubt, our opinions of what is art will differ. What is art to one might be trash to another. If you do not fancy their works, refrain from commenting. Keep the negative comments to yourself. For all you know, you might be the shallow one, and your comments will remove all doubts of it.

Some people are born to make great art and others are born to appreciate it.... It's a kind of talent in itself, to be an audience, whether you are a spectator in the gallery or you are listening to the voice of the world's greatest soprano. Not everyone can be an artist. There have to be those who witness the art, who love and appreciate what they have been privileged to see. - Ann Patchett

That art is best which suggests most. - Austin O’Malley

The work of art is above all a process of creation. - Paul Klee

You're an artist ... that means you see the world in ways that other people don't. It's your gift, to see the beauty and the horror in ordinary things. It doesn't make you crazy – just different. There's nothing wrong with being different. - Cassandra Clare
