Observations From My Balcony

Most of the apartments in Benalmadena have a balcony. People love to sit out on the balcony – sometimes sunbathing in the day, or have their dinners on the balcony in the evening. This is understandable, as most of the apartments are rather small. The main entrance open out into the corridor, and apart from two small windows on each side of the door, there is only the balcony window. During the summer months when it is warm, it can be rather stuffy unless they have air-conditioning. So, whenever possible, people like to sit out on the balcony.

After dinner, I enjoy sitting out on the balcony, and having drinks on the warm summer evenings. Later on there there will be some chips or peanuts. They go down so well with the whisky.

From my balcony, hidden by the semi darkness, I observed... I spy with my eye...

People walking to and fro, up and down the road - to either, the beach front or the town center. Sometimes, three generations family.

Old couples arm in arm, strolling, ambling along, leaning on each other, sometimes with one leaning on a cane, not in a hurry and not a care in the world. So sweet and endearing!

I saw dog owners making friends while their dogs try to make love. Animals!

I enjoy watching owners walking their dogs. There are as many types of owners as there are different breeds of dogs. Quite a few of the dogs look as if they are in their final days, and their owners not looking any younger. Sometimes, it is difficult to tell who is older, or who needs the walk more. But I guess, it it good for both to get out of the house and stretch their legs.

Here's a picture of an old guy with his, older dog. The dog really looked to be struggling with each step. The old man will walk in front with both hands behind his back, his dog on his leash. Every few steps the dog will take a break and the old man will wait patiently for his dog to resume walking again.

The saving grace of humankind – man taking care of their best friends – walking them, picking up after them. There is hope for humanity as long as man has got their best friends.

From my balcony, I saw the ‘cat lady’ coming along to feed the stray cats at about the same time every night. Such commitment to feeding the strays. There are two stray cats and they will wait in the car park for her to show up every night.

There is an old man in a green hat. Actually, he has a couple of straw hats. Sometimes he wear a different coloured one, but the green one is most striking. That was what drew my attention initially. He walks slowly with the help of a cane. He would go to the convenience shop to get his supplies. Sometimes, when he sees members of the opposite sex, he would stop and stared at them, and after them – and quite blatantly too. Cheeky old man!

I saw cars looking for parking space. On some busy nights, they have to go around a few times before finding a space, or give up finally and park somewhere else. And the extend they go to to ‘reserve’ their lot. I saw some of them struggled to park their car.

Just a few of the regular sightings in the evenings from my balcony. The little enjoyment of a simple man on a warm Summer evening – watching life’s drama unfolds, watching life goes on from his balcony. Believe me when I tell you I could write a book on what I saw. I probably won’t be able to sell any copy of it, but still, there is enough happenings to write a book on it.

This year, Benalmadena has been rather quiet. Seems to be a little slow in getting going. The weather was late in warming up, the tourists seem to be late in coming too. It doesn't seem as busy as previous years.

Views from the balcony in the day.
