Part 5: Julia
Landing back in Sydney after being away for a couple of years, Julia immediately remembered why she had to get away from here. The crowds, the noise and the hustle and bustle of life gave her an instant headache. Looking around the airport, she eventually located Joe in the crowd at arrivals. In the car on the way to his place, she found out about the break-in.
"Is the Piano ok? Was anything taken? Did it look like they damaged the piano? Is the carvings along the side intact?" She fired of question after question, concerned.
"Everything is fine" Joe tried to reassure her. "It looks like nothing more than scratches. Nothing else got taken. Do you know what those carvings are anyway?"
"All your grandmother told me was that they have something to do with Bitcoin. I have no idea, but she said a friend of hers told her it would be worth a bit one day."
"Well," Joe started, "I have managed to translate the carvings and it does indead relate to bitcoin. It looks like the code is actually a bitcoin wallet address. I looked it up and the wallet i think it relates to contains a hundred thousand bitcoins."
"Wait, isn't that worth alot"
"Nearly a billion dollars. At recent prices in Australian dollars it is just over $900 million."
"What, no way. Is that ours, how do we get that"
Joe looked at his mother and then asked the other question troubling him. "Why the hell is a wallet address with a billion dollars worth of bitcoin carved into a haunted piano by your late mother - who happened to be a witch? You need to explain everything you know about this to me. I don't get it."
Again, Julia paused before choosing her words carefully:
Remember those years when we lived with that piece of shit father of yours in Perth? Well, while we were away, Mum had some friends living with her. She kind of let people drop in and stay for a while.
Anyway, some of the forums and chat rooms she was into, with her Pagan stuff where filled with all sorts of interesting people. She kept telling me about some guy that hung out at the house for a few weeks. A bit mysterious if you ask me. She kept saying he called himself some Japanese name even though he didn't look Japanese. Anyway, apparently he had something to do with Bitcoin.
"Satoshi Nakamoto?" Joe asked.
"Yes that sounds right" Julia answered.
"That's not just some guy that had something to do with Bitcoin... That's the guy that invented it. No one knows who he is. Are you trying to tell me he was hanging out with grandma in our old house - just casually inventing bitcoin, playing the piano, and leaving clues to a billion dollar fortune behind?"
...To be continued.
