Dining Out - Gang Thai, Bar Ume

Gang Thai

My first visit to this local Thai restaurant was a while ago, and was not our intended location. It just happened that they were open while the neighbouring places were not. Catherine and I enjoyed a quiet meal with the only other table being used while we were there was the owners family dining before the dinner run actually started.

She had the Coconut Chicken Salad, and I had the Chilli Basil. Both dishes were quite good, with a decent amount of heat in them. So much so that I thought the salad was the actually hotter than the chilli basil dish!

The most recent visit was a farewell dinner to my housemate before he moved out to live with some family.

The Housemates.jpg
5 nations, 5 people, 1 house. Our Filipino resident leaves, to be replaced by a Nepalese, so we're still a very multicultural household

Between the 5 of us we mostly shared (the Vegetarian had Pad Thai Veg, with Tofu on her own) a few dishes and at the end I think we were all pleasantly full without any leftovers to cart home (unlike when I go out alone, or with my partner!)

When you're the only vegetarian in the house, you end up with your own plate when out for a meal like this

We had Yum Pla Muk, Beef Red Curry, Pad Thai Chicken, and enough rice for us to have all we wanted and still have some left in the bucket.

A Squid based spicy salad, quite a good liquid dressing along with perfectly cooked squid

Beef Red Curry.jpg
Beef, some veg, and a coconut based red curry sauce. There's a lot more than it looks like in this square bowl

Pad Thai Chicken.jpg
Quite a good pad thai, and like most of the dishes you have choices of the meat/veg in it, so the veg and tofu is just a different option of the same dish

Having been here twice now, and tried 5 dishes, I will certainly go back, as there hasn't been a bad dish yet. I guess there are reasons for their local awards as best Thai restaurant in the area.

Bar Ume

unassuming not quite corner shop in Surry Hills

What happens when you have a chef that's been awarded chef's hats regularly turns to making burgers? Well, when it's Bar Ume, you get a pretty decent burger with Japanese inspired flavours. The perfect accompaniment for this burger was the Renkon Chips, or as I know them, Lotus Chips.

I chose their Ume Burger. If you name a burger after your store, it better be good, and this one was

Renkon Chips.jpg
Perfect thickness for the Lotus Root slices for the best crispy chips I've had in a while

House Made Soda.jpg
Talking with my waiter after I'd finished, and he was actually cooking up a new batch of one of the 3 sodas they make and bottle in the bar

If I find myself in the area again, and feeling like burgers, there's a good chance I'll head here again. They also do some reasonable looking deals on their alcoholic beverages too.
