Amongst the thousands of Chinese restaurants dotted in and around London, one of the most popular has to be the Sichuan restaurants. Being one of the four most renowned dishes with the people of China, Sichuan-style food has become increasingly recognised by its unique cooking methods and aromatic blend of spice and fragrance.
Today, I would like to introduce you to my personal favourite Sichuan Restaurant near me. “Tian Fu” in Shepherds bush area, right next to the Westfield shopping mall (one of the largest urban shopping centres in the world). Its signature dish is the delicious Fragrant Spicy Fish, an innovative new twist on the traditional Sichuan Boiled Fish. Bursting with flavour mixed with a mild yet slightly pungent sauce! Absolutely beautiful! If you love your spicy food with a “back home” feel to it, then this is the meal for you.
Below is a selection of my favourite dishes from Tian Fu:
Signature Spicy Chicken
House special corn-fed chicken, served with a spicy sauce and bamboo shoot salad.
Fragrant Spicy Fish
A spectacular dish consisting of soft, tender fish mixed with tofu, glutinous rice sticks and aromatic spices.
Stir Dry Beans
Tian fu special stir of fried green beans cooked with succulent minced pork.
In addition, Tian Fu also serves the famous “Chinese Hot Pot”, which is extremely popular with local Chinese crowds and culturally very well-known all around China.
It’s basically a metal pot filled with herbs and stock, which is placed at the centre of the dining table. Raw and fresh ingredients are then laid out around the pot. You can choose from a list of various ingredients they present to you. Typically, these include thin slices of assorted meat, vegetables, mushrooms, dumplings and even some varieties of seafood. They are served to you on a tray which you then cook for yourself using chopsticks or a ladle in the simmering pot. So as you can imagine, it’s as much a social event as a dining out experience. Sauces are offered to for you to dip the morsels into.
I absolutely love Sichuan Yuanyang Hotpot. Sichuan Double Flavoured Hotpot, which is shown below, is a subtle variant of the traditional one. The pot is divided into two sections, resembling the recognized Yin & Yang symbol in Taoism. In essence, two different soup bases (spicy and non-spicy) in the pot to suit everyone’s personal tastes at the dining table.
On a cold winter night, there is nothing like a good Chinese hot pot to warm you up! And it doesn’t get much better than “Tian Fu”. Sichuan cuisines and Chinese Hotpot don’t come much better than this. Highly recommended if ever in this part of London.
Enjoy!
