On the last E3 we got the first images of Bravo Team presented. What we saw was a military shooter in which cooperation must be the key to success. In doing so, walking from cover to cover is of great importance, because hordes of enemies have to be laid down. Of course, some form of protection benefits.
This does jeniet without any kind of context. Bravo Team takes place in a fictional East European city. The president has just been murdered and so all kinds of groups see the opportunity to take power. Of course that should not happen and so the Bravo Team is called to prevent the country from tearing apart.
The two are against the rest
In our play session we did not notice anything of that story for the Bravo Team preview. That also does not matter, because we were especially curious about the gameplay. Before we even started the game, a co-op game had to be created first. After all, in Bravo Team cooperation is crucial and so we went into battle with the two of us. Do not be afraid, you can also play the game on your own.
Then we crawl into the digital skin of our soldiers, who are apparently wounded against a van on a wall. A teammate just got shot and only we are still alive, while many hostile soldiers are waiting for us on the bridge. The goal is simple: all those enemies must die and we must take care of that.
Kill enemies on a bridge
After we briefly explained the controls, we played Bravo Team with a special PlayStation Move gun, we were able to get started. We could not move freely, we could only walk from cover to cover. Now that was not a big problem, because there were plenty of cars that could protect us from bullets. In that sense, the bridge level really reminded us of that of the canceled Rainbow Six Patriots, which was built up in a similar way.
It was only very awkward. To walk to a certain coverage you have to aim with your weapon at that specific place. Then an image of a shield must appear, after which you can run there by pressing the x button. That did not always happen, so we sometimes received more bullets against us than was actually necessary.
Direction is done manually
We mentioned it in the section about running from cover to cover, but you can aim with your weapon. "That's logical, is not it?", We already hear you think. Yes, but in Bravo Team you have to do that entirely manually and that's where the true usefulness of the Move controller comes in, if you have the PlayStation Move rifle by the way. You have to hold the weapon that you hold in your hand in such a way that you can see ingame through it. That means that you have to keep it exactly in front of your eyes (your glasses), because you can then look through the scope in order to shoot off enemies.
The idea behind it is good, but for the time being it does not work completely well. Is partly due to habituation, you almost never do it that way in games, but sometimes your weapon does not do what you want. You do set a certain direction, but that is not taken over. And that while the controller is well calibrated with the PlayStation Eye. In this way you produce a lot of misgivings, while you yourself just go in the right direction. So that has to be tweaked.
Enemies are steel
Already running from cover to cover, we managed to get to the end of the level. Even though the enemy soldiers did everything to stop us, they had to make a constant stand against us. That was not entirely easy, because they were almost steel. Even though we shot one opponent through the head five times, he stayed alive.
Great that you do not just kill every opponent with two shots, but a headshot remains a headshot. If you need five of them before someone falls down, that's just not true. As far as we are concerned, that may still be adjusted.
Cracking helicopter lockpiece of intensive mission
We managed to reach the end of the bridge within ten minutes, after which a crashing Allied helicopter made an abrupt end to the mission. It was a rather intensive trip, but we were only two of us fighting against different horde of five men. Teamwork was of great importance, because you had to keep telling each other about who is where, where the enemies are and if the coast is safe to continue to cover. If you do not do that, then that will result in death more often.
Preliminary Conclusion
It should be clear that there is certainly still something to be adjusted to Bravo Team. The enemies can catch just too many bullets, your weapon sometimes turns in a different direction than you do and the cover system does not always work. If this is remedied, we certainly have one of the best VR games in house with Bravo Team. It felt so good to have a perfect kill when everything worked together.
SuperMassive Games, which is also behind Until Dawn, has at least a few months to polish everything. Bravo Team namely comes March 7 from the PlayStation VR exclusive game for the PlayStation 4.
