Dead Rising 4 Review: Frank's Big Package - Story fascinating enough

GA.06199.0002.jpg

After two parts of absence he finally returned to the PlayStation platform! Frank West is in the spotlight in Dead Rising 4. The game has been out on the Xbox One for a year now, but now PlayStation owners can also cut mischievous zombies into pieces. We took a look at this edition, which is full of content, to see if it is worthwhile to live in, or that it is better to let the stumbbler quietly pass us by. You check it below.

But the research then?

Frank West is immediately entangled in a bizarre situation at the beginning of the game. Frank was going to investigate a secret laboratory with Vick, but soon he appeared to be framed there. Vick does not want to research anything, but just go mini-golf. Right. That immediately sets the tone of the game, namely complete absurdity. The beginning of the game also functions as a great tutorial and after the necessary has taken place, we can actually get started. Frank has found out that Willamette once again became a victim of a zombie outbreak. As befits a good reporter, Frank West goes back to research.

Frank has also visited the laboratory in the meantime and he has discovered that the organization responsible for various experiments that have been done is also present in Willamette. In short, all the scum and the zombies are in Willamette and that is reason enough to go completely loose in that place. We do not want to say much more about the story, because although you do not have to expect the depth of a well, it is so fascinating that it held us the whole singleplayer. That accompanied by a great dose of humor and we can not say anything else than that we have entertained ourselves with this adventure.

A thick pack of snow

What contributes to the interest to go through the story is of course the gameplay. Dead Rising 4 uses the sandbox principle, so you go in all kinds of areas and whenever you want. This is combined with a large amount of weapons, because almost everything can be used and that is really fantastic. It delivers the most comical scenes, for example, think about putting a Christmas wreath under power while you walk around in a fireman's suit, to name a few. There is plenty to do in Willamette, because besides finishing zombies, you can also save stranded people, open safe rooms for extra rewards, find blueprints and much more. Especially the latter is interesting, because you can unlock new bizarre weapon combinations.

The weapons are already in abundance, as indicated earlier. Not only the stroke and the impact has enough variation, the shooting objects can also be very creative. A crossbow shooting fire arrows and then letting festive zombies burst apart is a nice example. Those weapons in themselves also have a good influence on the humorous tone that the game knows and what contributes to this is the Christmas atmosphere that now prevails in the game. All zombies are dressed in eleven suits and there is a lot of snow. Some of the enemy soldiers who occasionally pass by are also dressed up in gingerbread or snowman costumes. And the music in the menu screens is focused on Christmas, which makes it complete.

Large playground

Willamette is big, very big. So a vehicle with wheels is very useful, but that is not necessarily a requirement. As long as it progresses and it can pulverize zombies, you're fine and of course there is plenty of variation in that. The most absurd vehicles are passing by and they are all very useful to overturn the hordes of zombies, to electrocute them or simply to burn with frying fat. So far, especially a hymn about Dead Rising 4, but here too the criticisms come to light.

You can slaughter zombies endlessly in the world without a time limit attached to it and that can in time generate a repetitive feeling. How nice it is to put your underwear, with dino legs and a cowboy hat on, zombies with a lawn mower to be chopped, brainless chopping remains brainless heels. This is further facilitated, because Frank West in Dead Rising 4 has a huge amount of health, so you can hardly die. As a result, the challenge falls slightly to the background, but the downside is that there are plenty of other activities in the world, as previously mentioned.

The atmosphere is sublime

In addition to all the cases mentioned, you also encounter so-called 'maniacs' in the world of Dead Rising 4. These are crazy people who let themselves go through the zombie apocalypse. The first suckers you meet are fans of the medieval theme and they are only too happy to pick up everything dressed as a knight. That, of course, did not stop us from keeping the dress code when we went to attack them. Another group with maniacs are the Christmas fanatics dressed like fairies and walking around with toy weapons. Our penguin head that could shoot icicles was a lot more effective than toy weapons and so we were able to make short work of this.

With every maniac you encounter, you finally fight against a final boss to put an end to their disorder. Here, too, all sorts of absurd figures pass by and we can tell you that Sadistic Claus did not survive with us. The single player works with everything it offers enormously on the laughter muscles, but we have to say that it is technically not always in good order. Zombies stuck in stairs you see more than once. Ambulances that suddenly make a jump from standstill or curbs that function like a mountain while driving are things that can not actually be done. It is of course laughable and it does not perturb, but it is a bit on the sloppy side. Apart from that, there is actually little to criticize on the single player.

We're going to play Mini golf ... with crashes

Do you need any variety after the boss battles and the endless sex of zombies? Then the game offers a lot of extra content. You can play the entire single player in the 'Capcom Heroes' mode, which becomes more and more extensive as you collect stars in the regular single player. With these stars you can unlock costumes from various characters from Capcom's stable. Think of Ryu from Street Fighter, Mega Man or even Dante from Devil May Cry. The zombies are completed in style by the characters who use their distinctive fighting styles. That creates a bit more variation, but it is not infinitely available. After a certain amount of time, you will lose your suit and you will play with Frank West in his normal clothes again.

It is a pity, however, that every Capcom hero uses the same type of gameplay, which means throwing an object, hitting it and then shooting it, with a special attack last. Now every character differs in appearance and special attack, but for the rest it is basically the same. It sounds very nice on paper and that's it for a while, but you get bored pretty quickly because it's too repetitive. Sad, because the concept is actually pretty cool.

Another mode is Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf. Here you can go mini-golf alone or with people online. While you hit the ball with a nice swing, it goes straight through a horde of zombies. That way you earn points again and the one with the most points eventually wins the game of golf. In addition to this mode, you can also play individual missions in the multiplayer with friends or else online with strangers. Strangely enough, the cooperative mode is completely absent in this version, while it was in the previous part. Eternally sin. What makes the multiplayer not much better is that if we wanted to find a match online, the game crashed again and again. So we have hardly been able to try the multiplayer and that is unacceptable in 2017.

Conclusion

The single player is very entertaining and also highly recommended. The game feels like a true arcade slasher and comes out fine with that. Although the story and the atmosphere do a lot of good, it is unfortunate that there is no proper co-op mode in the game. The extra modes are fun and appreciated, but the technical flaws in the game prevented us from enjoying this normally. Dead Rising 4 is of course mainly about the single player and that is fine, it is a pity that the negatives - which mainly apply to the other modes - negatively affect the overall experience. Are you just going for the single player? Then the game is worth it and you can add a point to the final mark. If you want to enjoy the multiplayer ... we advise you to wait until everything works properly.
