FIFA 18 Review - Realistic and prettier than ever

It's cliché to say that FIFA 18 is the best football game so far, because you expect a new game that's better than its predecessor. Nevertheless, I can say that FIFA 18 is more beautiful and more realistic than before. Why this is the way you read in the FIFA 18 review!

Every year EA Sports returns with a new FIFA with which they want to win millions of players for themselves. The question for many players is therefore whether the game has improved in comparison with the previous edition to plunder your savings account. Last year EA Sports managed to surprise friend and foe, using the Frostbite engine and introducing The Journey . The Journey, as in the NBA 2K series , had to create depth if you're on the verge of footballer Alex Hunter's career.

Steps ahead

Like Alex Hunter, the Frostbite engine had to offer FIFA new features, graphics and draft. And on many fronts that also worked well, but FIFA 17 was definitely not perfect. A year later, the development team has more experience with the engine that benefits FIFA 18. The game looks better and offers improvements to the gameplay.

Honestly, EA Sports says every year that FIFA games look better, but this year, the images are not about. From a distance, it seems like the new motion upgrade and improved graphics look like a real football match. But not only the players have been upgraded, the stadiums, the audience in the stadiums and the feeling you get when playing a match are greatly improved.

Ambiance

Football is emotion and when you are watching a match in another stadium or country, you must have a different feeling than watching a home match. That's what EA Sports thought about by first giving the audience a big upgrade. You do not have the feeling that the crowd is filled with an army that can get out of the Clone Wars. Of course, almost all supporters cheer at a goal, but not everyone responds the same.

In FIFA 18, the fans are not all the same at the same time when they are scored and they do not clap anymore at the exact same time. Some fans even run towards the field to celebrate the goal with the player. FIFA 18 stands out for ambiance that benefits the game. For example, if you play at Manchester United, the stadium is also really filled with fans in red colors, including flags and banners.

In addition to the improved graphics of the players (wow, what looks good!), The stadiums and her supporters, EA Sports has also looked at the light effects that need to provide extra ambiance. For example, if you play a contest in Spain or Mexico, you get a kind of sepia filter about the image that makes you feel like watching a contest that really can take place. These are minor improvements that make the game unique.

Real players

As we have previously appointed, FIFA 18 is in fact a well-developed FIFA 17, but a feature that is new and attention is the new motion technology. In previous FIFA games, different movements were taken apart, so sometimes it seemed like you were driving a robot that is quite woody. For FIFA 18, EA Sports has collaborated with Ronaldo (who is also on cover) to include complete moves. Through the new technology, the animations can now be framed by frame, making the gameplay just a lot smoother and ultimately more realistic.

No more crazy animations in which a player gets back in one second or makes side moves, but smooth movements. These loose frames are then merged into one whole, making each move really complete, instead of seeing two half-movements soon after each other. As a result, the gameplay feels a bit heavier. When a player performs an action, you can not make another move immediately, even if you would like to do that. This is physically just not possible and so realistic.

Dribbling or tackling

In addition to Ronaldo, several other major players have also been analyzed to deliver a realistic image. This way you soon recognize Ronaldo, Messi or Neymar, and how they hold their hands and turn off. The dribbling in FIFA 18 is therefore adapted to the player's style. For example, with Messi, you can easily avoid slums and players, but it's almost impossible to track Ronaldo with a smaller player.

EA Sports analyzed not only the physical attributes of the athletes, but also the technical attributes. A player who is better at performing a tackle should therefore not run along a side slope to make a short cut as Messi. It makes FIFA 18 just a little more authentic and realistic, making you feel like you're really playing a game of football without having to pull it out of the box.

Tactical insight

With more realistic players, you also expect a more realistic team. EA Sports tries to balance the game continuously, for example by adjusting the defense or attack. That's why passes and supporters are taken to the kick, to make the teams playing over the wings authentically. For example, in FIFA 17, the behavior of teams did not match their playing style in daily life.

In FIFA 18, the games styles of the teams are therefore better implemented. Manchester City is looking for the wings in the attack and you get used to Real Madrid's play style as you do not get to the ball. These new improvements are now much better noted in the gameplay - if you do not play at beginner level of course. The combination with the new propulsion system (in terms of speed and the angle from which the player has to provide and attributes) and the better performed play styles can make you choose the best teams less quickly, but a team that fits your own playing style.

The Journey

Your own playing style also comes with your own player. We have already announced that Alex Hunter is back and this time he goes on to stay in FIFA 17, but also shows that the best man is international. This gives him the opportunity to play for Real Madrid, but depends on the choices you make in different cutscenes. Additionally, you can also customize Alex to suit your needs, skin color and facial features.

It is also possible to play The Journey with two players by playing with other playable characters. Clearly, EA Sports has put time in The Journey, adding the new teams and asking for time from big players like Ronaldo and Henry.

Ultimate Team

In addition to The Journey, EA Sports has also released time to make improvements to the beloved Ultimate Team. In FIFA 18, EA Sports launches FUT ICONS. Here you can play with the most iconic football legends like Henry, Ronaldo Nazário, Maradona, Pelé and Ronaldinho. In addition, these players get different versions of themselves, with unique statistics for key moments of their career.

In addition to FUT ICONS, EA Sports also launches the new Squad Battles. In this you will battle with other FUT community selections to earn rewards and climb in the rankings. For example, there is a new class every week, so you play different matches against other selections (and choose at any level) to earn points and get the most beautiful prizes.

Lost child

Ultimate Team is a beloved mode to play and it is also logical that EA Sports puts a lot of time in it, as it can earn money through microtransactions. But a mode that was previously given a little attention was the career mode. In FIFA 18, EA Sports introduces new scenes when, for example, you want to buy or sell a player. You are really going to sit as a manager to talk to the manager of another club or business attorney about the transfer.

This reminds us of The Journey, but it brings a new dynamic to the familiar mode. Once you have bought a player, you will see a dynamic representation of the announcement and disclosure in the news summary. Thanks to the Frostbite engine, the players can just move in this presentation. In addition to announcement and disclosure, dynamic images of team photos, player of month awards, and when your team wins a prize.

FIFA 18 review - Prettier and more realistic

FIFA 18 is completely remarkable and more beautiful. The combination of more realistic gameplay features like motion technology and playstyle and graphical progress thanks to the Frostbite engine, makes the game really fantastic. EA Sports has made clear steps against previous editions to make the game more realistic than ever. The game therefore begins to resemble real football. And yes, FIFA 18 is by far the best football game you can currently find on the market.

FIFA 18 will be in stores from 29 September.
