SingStar was expanded on the assembly line with new titles years ago. Nowadays the franchise is not much more in the picture, until there SingStar Celebration suddenly appeared as PlayLink title. SingStar Celebration is exactly what you know about the franchise and now that it falls under PlayLink, you can also use your mobile phone as a microphone. With the phone in hand we picked up awkward positions for the TV to try to match with our lousy voice, which singers and singers all get out of their throats.
Variation
Variation, that's the key word in a game like SingStar. Then of course we aim at the soundtrack, which should be as varied as possible, so that it appeals to a wide audience. That Sony has succeeded, because the game offers all kinds of popular songs from now and then. Think of an Adele with Hello, but also ABBA with Dancing Queen. Furthermore, in the soundtrack Avicii with Wake Me Up we see again, as well as Britney Spears with Oops! ... I Did It Again. In short, the soundtrack is a mix of all kinds of great songs that are perfect for SingStar and so an evening with talented singing friends.
The concept is as usual, only now you have to connect your mobile phone to your PlayStation 4. This can be done via the Wi-Fi network, as well as via the PlayStation 4 itself, which can be set as an access point. Once that is done, you can start in the standard vocal mode, where you choose a random song to sing. Then of course it is important to sing along as well as possible and then preferably at the right pitch. Whether the text that you pronounce then corresponds to what the actual lyrics are, does not really matter. A known point of the SingStar franchise, but this software is simply not far enough to detect a correct pronunciation.
Different modes
The standard mode is ideal for moments in between and because of the varied soundtrack there is something for everyone. However, if you are such an avid player, you can always use the SingStore to further expand the library of tracks. This SingStore offers plenty of extra possibilities and that costs money, but if you enjoy it, you can greatly expand the experience. The game itself is not particularly extensive, but you are not limited in what the basic package offers and that is very nice in itself. You can also do well to the online community, which without shame has put videos of themselves online. That can be very entertaining to dig through.
What is also entertaining are the different modes that the game offers. Besides the traditional mode you can also go to the so-called Party modes. Here you can play in a series of fragments from a selection of songs. You can also battling against each other and there are still some more options. In the end it is not particularly extensive, but it does provide a bit more variation, also in the gameplay. That together with the soundtrack makes it actually quite a complete game. Of course it is because it is aimed at a casual audience and it has a low price, a somewhat compact edition, but this is playable indefinitely.
An advantage or a disadvantage...
Playing the game with a mobile phone works amazingly well. The microphone can pick up your voice, but there is a drawback to it. If you play the game with more than two men, then the situation is soon that everyone is sitting side by side on the couch. Everyone is sitting with their mobile phone in hand, but you know that the microphone picks up more than just your voice. For example, we regularly had the voice of another person being picked up, and if it sings better than you, you can easily cheat by just keeping your mouth shut. Perhaps this is in some way a limitation of the telephone, but it does give a distorted picture in the results.
If you really do not bake anything, then you can also use this technical disadvantage to your advantage. But whether that is fun... that is of course to be doubted. We also occasionally had to wait a few seconds at the start of a song before the microphone actually picked up the voice, so we missed a part of the track. What is that about? No idea, but that can sometimes be a bit annoying, especially if the microphone records the sound of someone else right from the first moment. Apart from that, the phone offers an extra useful feature which in turn benefits the experience and that is the option to create your own playlist. That is now easier than ever.
Conclusion
The SingStar games from Sony have always been of good quality and that is no different with SingStar Celebration. It is ideal for in-between sessions as well as longer sessions and the phone works as a great alternative to a microphone. The fact that it also takes environmental noise can be a bit detrimental, just as it sometimes does not register well when you start singing. Those are small points, because otherwise the soundtrack is very varied, the game offers plenty of fun modes and the library offers many options to expand your own tracklist even further. Furthermore, all (old) SingStar community content is available and there are real pearls between, both in quality and in hilarity. It is a pity that the community is a bit dead, but perhaps that it will start to live again with the release of SingStar Celebration.
