Hello gamers and scientist to another episode of the KSP Series. After all the preparations and research, Kerbals have green light for their first mission. The moral in Whack Space Center is more than high so they need to stay concentrated on the task in fron of them. With Jebediah as our captain, they will do the first mission of flying on Kerbin, their own planet.
As you already know, Whack Space Crew is currently on hold with all the missions until Jebediah returns, hopefully. This mission will tell everything they need to know about aerodynamics of their home planet. Will they succeed and bring some crucial scientific data back, who knows!
Wobbly Bobbly, our first aerocraft - as they like to call it on Kerbin, will carry Jebediah Kerman on a historic ride to visit few small island near our Whack Space Center. Valentina Kermin is our second pilot but Jebediah is much more experienced so he will be our first guy in the air. Kerbals still don't know their history and how they came here. All they have are few stories but they are not scientificaly proven. Their goal is to colonize the whole Kerbol system and find the answers along the way. Currently, the best theory is that they arrived from Jool's moon Laythe but Kerbals don't lean on their faith, they want to prove that.
As Jebediah was trying to see if everything works fine with his aerocraft, Whack Security Board was checking the wind and every other possibility that can ruin this mission. They want to be sure that Jebediah will come back alive, with science data or without. They just want to see him back becuase losing him might postpone other missions for a long time. Seemingly crazy, but Kerbals know what and why they are taking some actions.
Green light was given and Jebediah took a deep breath and throttle up a bit while turning off the brakes. It was at that moment that everybody stood in silence wondering will this work. After 10-20 meters, the first problems started. The aerocraft is indeed wobbly bobbly so Jebediah had to steer it manually so that he don't go off the runway. This is why Jebediah was first person to do this, his experience is something golden and it helped him once again.
He managed to steer the aerocraft and took off without any further problems. The batteries were full and fuel was more than enough for this mission so the burden fell down for every living Kerbal out there. This is history in making and they understand that fact and that's why they take it so seriously.
While visiting those 3 small islands near them, Jebediah saw some shiny object and had to go check this out. Since the aerocraft has 2 science Jr. labs, 2 baromethers and 2 theromometers, this was the special occasion where science data could be gathered for further explorations. As he went closer and closer, he realized that that's another runway. What a coincidence! This could answer some questions that old folks are talking about.
While this was a dirt runway, Jeb didn't want to risk too much so he only passed by to see if there's anything in hangars there. Unfortunately, nothing was there but the hangars with the tower can be of some usage in the future. While collecting crucial scientific data, Jeb turned to left and pushed the pedal to the medal trying to come back home alive and well.
Since this was the first landing for him and any other Kerbals, it was though to decide how fast he can go. About 300 meters from runway, Jeb got a message from Whack Space Center that he might be going too fast and that he will need to make some whack manouvre to land safely. Experience of Jeb once again proved crucial as he did his first whack manouvre and slowed down for about 150 m/s.
It was the moment where everybody thought it is over, Jeb is dead. But, Jeb just smiled and continued to be concentrated on his task of landing safely to secure his scientific data. The wind was blowing in his favor and everything seemed fine until the moment he touched the runway. At that moment, landing gear exploded and the fire caught half of the aerocraft. That half exploded in a second due to fuel tanks being near and other half fliped around and hit the ground fiercly, destroying the rest of the aerocraft and scientific data.
This time, Kerbals were lucky becuase the pod they used for this mission withstand everything and Jebediah Kerman managed to survive. The whole aerocraft, except for 2 gears, dissappered in ashes and showed Kerbals that they need more data and work to be able to land safely.
The first mission ended with Kerbals having mixed feelings about it. Some of them are eager to continue to do their next mission while others think it's still maybe too early to send Kerbals up in sky/space. Their lives are very important and losing them would demotivate a lot of Kerbals. Until they see the log from the black box from aerocraft, they want to send their love for Jeb who is currently in hospital undergoing a surgery. Luckily, Jeb will be fine and it's nothing serious so let's just hope we will see more missions!
