It is a gorgeous day in the Garden of Eden, and we are giving thanks for more than enough of everything in this abundant life of freedom!
We made a delicious feast for our full time volunteers on our indoor wood burning stove rather than on the rocket stoves of our sustainable outdoor kitchen. We stayed nice and toasty, had a fantastic meal, AND heated water for showers for super sustainable efficiency. As usual, there was more than enough food for everyone, and we are happy to share our abundance with you!
We grilled up turkey burgers and served them with fresh garden salad, crunchy & sweet broccoli salad, and fried potatoes topped with our homemade mayonnaise!
Some of us like to eat meat sometimes, and others don't. We offered grilled turkey burgers as a main dish for the carnivores.
We paired them with bright mixed lettuces from the garden to make a nice base for a salad. There are many varieties of lettuces, each with unique flavors and properties. Lettuce generally is a source of fiber, manganese, potassium,B vitamins, copper, iron, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, phosphorus, chromium, magnesium, and calcium - that's a lot of nutrition for a simple salad!
We made a second cold salad with raw broccoli, red onion, sprouted sunflower seeds, and chewy dried raisins. The combination of flavors and textures make this dish an Eden Knight favorite!
For the last side in tonight's feast, we made a big bowl of fried potatoes. We love potatoes around here! They are super versatile and delicious in a huge range of preparations. Fried and mashed are a couple of our go to potato styles.
The real star of today's feast was our homemade mayo!! This is so easy to prepare from just vinegar, egg yolk, and oil; it can be made from scratch in literally under a minute! We used it to dress the broccoli salad, and some of us used it to top the fried potatoes and turkey burgers as well.
Our homemade mayo has a beautiful, rich yellow color because we use the yolk of our farm fresh chicken eggs to make it.
Food is important, and we hope to inspire people to really take time to eat, enjoy it, and share it with someone you love. We also hope to inspire more and more sustainable practices in regards to food!
We do all of our cooking over fire, using wood that was otherwise destined to end up in a landfill! This is our indoor wood burning stove in action - it cooks our food, warms our communal space, and heats water for hot showers all at the same time!
Food is an honored & elemental part of our daily life in community. You can learn more about our unique, intimate, and super sustainable relationship with food here!
