GLD (SPDR Gold Shares) vs. GLD (Gold Loving Dog)

What's the difference between these two GLD's?

Well first, let me show you a couple pictures. This is the Gold Loving Dog:

And this is the SPDR Gold Shares:

I know they may look similar but trust me they are MUCH different. Let me explain.

GLD (not the cute dog kind) is an ETF traded on the New York Stock Exchange. According to https://www.spdrgoldshares.com/ GLD offers investors "an innovative, relatively cost efficient and secure way to access the gold market."

The site also states that it offers investors "one of the lowest available expense ratios for a U.S. listed physically gold-backed ETF."

So are you really owning gold by purchasing shares of GLD? Are your shares really backed by physical, solid, indestructible gold?

Not really. If you own shares of GLD, you can only request physical delivery of metal if you possess a minimum of 100,000 shares (at the current gold price of $1,241.95 per ounce, that would be over a million dollars).

Let's say you DID have that many shares though- even so, the GLD ETF reserves the right to settle your delivery request in cash.

Uh oh. You could be receiving Mene or a Steem silver round, but instead you're left with what's behind them:

Plus there's counterparty risk on all levels- isn't gold supposed to preserve your wealth?

But wait Goldfashioned, what is the other type of GLD you speak of?

GREAT QUESTION!

The other GLD (Gold Loving Dog) is my faithful companion who LOVES gold and precious metals:

He is always happy whether it's with Mene:

The Steem silver round:

Or the Goldmoney card!

There's a pretty big difference between these GLD's. 99% of the time when I say GLD I'm referring to the Gold Loving Dog, with an exception being this post :)

Thanks for reading!
