Our first full day out in the Lake District was brilliant. It is just as I imagined the place. One of the key features in the landscape of this region is the sheer number of these hand built stone walls pictured below.
They are everywhere and just look so beautiful up close or in the distance.
Stone walls
The more we travelled around and the more of these walls that we saw, made me think.
If you were to add up all of the stone walls in this region. It would have been a collosal undertaking with the amount of stone needed, the work required and the labour to build them all.
An achievement on a par with the great Pyramids or the Great Wall of China!
Hill or Mountain?
The United Kingdom and the United States used to define hills as summits less than 1,000 feet.
I liked the way the golden sunlight hit the walls in the photo above. That may well be a hill in the background but it still looked like a long walk up.
When you think of all the many generations of people that built this environment. It is quite amazing?
The scenery in the Lake District is just breathtaking and this waterfall was one of many that we saw on our travels.
A beautiful waterfall
The Lake District is officially the wettest place in England. It even has it's own rain forest!
I hope you enjoyed this little trip up to the Lake District with me. We loved it. More posts on this region are in the works.
