Más aun, a lugares en que se necesitaba de personas con conocimientos especializados para ofrecer apoyo psicológico a los más necesitados en ese momento.
Se organizaron y acudieron a los líderes comunitarios para ofrecer su ayuda. Coordinaron un intercambio con estudiantes de Psicología de la universidad de La Habana, que también se ofrecieron a ayudar. ¡Podría contarles tantas anécdotas, convertidas en enseñanzas para mí, de aquella semana! Pero sería material para varios post y el objetivo de este es mostrarles que hicieron hoy en el inicio de la semana de trabajo comunitario de este año.
The humanity that these guys have shown me has been enormous. I remember last year how they organized themselves after Hurricane Ian to go to some of the many places where a helping hand was needed. Even more, to places where people with specialized knowledge were needed to offer psychological support to those most in need at that time.
They organized themselves and reached out to community leaders to offer their help. They coordinated an exchange with psychology students from the University of Havana, who also offered to help. I could tell you so many anecdotes, turned into lessons for me, from that week! But it would be material for several posts and the purpose of this one is to show you what they did today at the beginning of this year's community work week.
Pero antes de referirme a eso solo voy a mencionar un pequeño hecho que me marcó. Acudimos a una comunidad en que el ciclón había devastado varias viviendas. Particularmente recuerdo a una mujer que anegada en llanto nos relataba su experiencia de como ella y su pequeña hija se protegieron en un closet mientras el viento levantaba el techo de su casa. ¡Momentos duros!
¿Qué me marcó más de esa experiencia? En medio de esa catarsis una de nuestras estudiantes se acercó y le preguntó: ¿Puedo darle un abrazo? Fue un instante mágico. Automáticamente la mujer se serenó. Fue como si le quitaran un peso enorme de encima. Para mi, presenciar ese momento ha sido una de las experiencias profesionales que más me ha marcado. Los estudiantes no podían ofrecerles recursos materiales para recomenzar después de un suceso tan impactante. Sin embargo, fueron allí a trabajar por el prójimo con los recursos que si tenían, como lo hicieron otros cientos de personas.
But before I refer to that, I will just mention a small fact that marked me. We went to a community where the cyclone had devastated several houses. I particularly remember a woman who, in tears, told us her experience of how she and her little daughter were sheltered in a closet while the wind lifted the roof of her house. Tough moments!
What marked me the most about that experience? In the midst of that catharsis one of our students approached her and asked: Can I give you a hug? It was a magical moment. The woman automatically calmed down. It was as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. For me, witnessing that moment has been one of the professional experiences that has marked me the most. The students could not offer them material resources to start over after such a shocking event. However, they went there to work for the next one with the resources they had, as did hundreds of others.
Hoy mis estudiantes vuelven a brindarse para aportar algo de luz a sus semejantes. Iniciaron realizando una actividad en el parque “Roberto Amarán” más conocido como el parque del Bosque, en el centro de la ciudad. Allí se reúnen a diario un grupo de abuelos a practicar Taichí. Esperaron pacientemente a que terminara la sesión y posteriormente realizaron una actividad bien dinámica en la que intercambiaron con los abuelos. Podría decir que contribuyeron en cierto modo al bienestar de ese grupo que allí se reúne diariamente sin tomar vacaciones siquiera pero en realidad el intercambio fue muy productivo. Aprendimos todos: profesores, estudiantes y profesores.
Se realizaron técnicas de animación. Se ofrecieron orientaciones desde el punto de vista psicológico a los ancianos tanto para contribuir a su bienestar emocional como para el cuidado de sus nietos. De ellos aprendimos mucho también. ¡Es tanta la experiencia que puede transmitirnos una persona que ha llegado a esa etapa de la vida! ¡Consejos tan valiosos que nos ofrecieron! Nos relataron cómo ha cambiado sus vidas el integrarse a ese grupo y comenzar a practicar ese arte marcial.
Today my students are once again doing their part to bring some light to their peers. They started by carrying out an activity in the "Roberto Amarán" park, better known as "Parque del Bosque", in the center of the city. A group of grandparents meet there every day to practice Tai Chi. They waited patiently for the session to end and then carried out a very dynamic activity in which they exchanged with the grandparents. I could say that they contributed in some way to the well-being of this group that meets there daily without even taking a vacation, but in reality the exchange was very productive. We all learned: teachers, students and professors.
Animation techniques were used. Psychological guidance was offered to the elderly both for their emotional well-being and for the care of their grandchildren, from whom we learned a lot. We learned a lot from them as well, so much experience a person who has reached that stage of life can transmit to us! Such valuable advice they offered us! They told us how it has changed their lives to join this group and start practicing this martial art.
Confieso que siempre que los veía practicando sentía gran curiosidad, pero nunca imaginé los aportes que puede traerles a la salud física y emocional esa práctica. Nada… que debo agradecerles a ellos por todas sus experiencias relatadas y sobretodo a mis estudiantes por organizar esa actividad regalarme otra muestra de su talento y calidad humana puesta al servicio del prójimo.
