Un saludo a todos en esta bella comunidad de Hive Cuba, como saben el Huracán Ian pasó de manera desastrosa por nuestro país, principalmente por la provincia de Pinar del Río, donde vivo. Muchas son las imágenes que se pueden ver de este suceso, pero hoy quiero mostrarles y comentarles los estragos de Ian en mi centro de trabajo, la Universidad de Pinar del Río, donde soy profesora de Inglés e imparto clases en la misma carrera de la que soy graduada, Lenguas Extranjeras. Asimismo quisiera hablarles de las tareas de higienización que tanto profesores como estudiantes llevamos a cabo para salir adelante y poder reiniciar el curso escolar vigente.

Estragos de Ian

En estas primeras imágenes que les mostraré verán el desastre que quedó tras el paso de Ian, en la sede pedagógica de la universidad, principalmente en la 4ta planta que es donde se encuentra el Departamento de Lenguas Extranjeras.

Las imágenes son muy fuertes, fue muy duro volver a la universidad y encontrarnos las aulas, donde pasamos tantos momentos buenos con nuestros estudiantes, en esas fatales condiciones. Puertas caídas, ventanales destrozados, sillas y hasta un escritorio en el pasillo, pizarras en el piso, todo un desastre. También habían troncos de árboles caídos y papel de techo bloqueando el paso. Y aquí solo estoy mostrando parte de la 4ta planta, donde se encuentran las aulas de la carrera de inglés, en el resto de la instalación, principalmente en la parte de la residencia estudiantil hubo más afectaciones.

Aquí se puede ver como el huracán dañó el ventanal del Salón de Protocolos en la 2da planta. También vemos el Centro de documentación en la tercera planta que quedó al descubierto por la parte de atrás al desprenderse un gran ventanal, así como en la parte de alante las ventanas todas despegadas del techo, solo la puerta quedó en el mismo lugar. Muchas ventanas sufrieron daños en toda la universidad, entre ellas las del teatro como les muestro aquí.

Trabajo voluntario

En los días posteriores al huracán y después de ver los daños que ocasionó, toda la universidad se enfocó en las tareas de higienización y trabajo voluntario. Tanto profesores como estudiantes se ofrecieron a ayudar con esta tarea, recogiendo escombros dentro fuera de la universidad, limpiando las aulas y ayudando en donde se necesitara, con el afán de volver a la normalidad y continuar el curso escolar.

El Departamento de Lenguas Extranjeras no se quedó atrás en esta tarea y todos los profesores nos dispusimos a ello, los jóvenes y los no tan jóvenes, todos trabajando por igual para recuperar nuestro centro laboral. Cabe mencionar que muchos de nuestros estudiantes, principalmente los que viven en la ciudad, se incorporaron de manera voluntaria a este trabajo. Aquí les dejo unas imágenes.

En estas dos últimas imágenes pueden ver como tuvimos que poner al sol todos los equipos electrónicos que usamos en la carrera como televisores, computadoras y grabadoras con la esperanza de que aún pudieran funcionar, pues el local donde estaban guardados se filtró mucho y todos los equipos se mojaron. El único lugar que no sufrió daños mayores fue el local de profesores del departamento.

De vuelta a la escuela

En fin, gracias a todo el esfuerzo que hicimos pudimos retomar el curso escolar vigente y hoy estoy de vuelta y muy feliz de volver a ver a mis estudiantes después de tantos días. Se siente muy bien volver a estar frente al aula enseñando algo que me apasiona, el inglés.

Aquí les dejo una foto de mis estudiantes, los cuales son muy respetuosos y hacen que disfrute darles clase, me encanta el hecho de que pueda formar parte de su aprendizaje y aportarles mi granito de conocimiento. Muchos de ellos son mayores que yo, pues este año estoy trabajando en el Curso Por Encuentro, también conocido como curso para trabajadores, el cual se realiza todos los sábados y es para personas que trabajan durante los días de semana y quieren sacar su título universitario.

Greetings to all in this beautiful community of Hive Cuba, as you know, Hurricane Ian passed disastrously through our country, mainly through the province of Pinar del Río, where I live. There are many images that can be seen of this event, but today I want to show you and tell you about Ian's ravages in my workplace, the University of Pinar del Río, where I am an English teacher and teach classes in the same career as I am a graduate, Foreign Languages. I would also like to talk to you about the sanitation tasks that both teachers and students carry out to get ahead and be able to restart the current school year.

Ian's Havoc

In these first images that I will show you, you will see the disaster that was left after Ian's passage, in the pedagogical headquarters of the university, mainly on the 4th floor, which is where the Department of Foreign Languages ​​is located.

The images are very strong, it was very hard to return to the university and find ourselves in the classrooms, where we spent so many good moments with our students, in those fatal conditions. Fallen doors, shattered windows, chairs and even a desk in the hallway, blackboards on the floor, a complete disaster. There were also fallen tree trunks and roofing paper blocking the way. And here I am only showing part of the 4th floor, where the English major classrooms are located, in the rest of the installation, mainly in the part of the student residence, there were more damages.

Here you can see how the hurricane damaged the window of the Protocols Room on the 2nd floor. We also see the Documentation Center on the third floor that was exposed from the back when a large window came off, as well as in the front the windows all detached from the ceiling, only the door remained in the same place. Many windows were damaged throughout the university, including those in the theater as I show you here.

Volunteer work

In the days after the hurricane and after seeing the damage it caused, the entire university focused on sanitation and volunteer work. Both professors and students offered to help with this task, collecting rubble outside the university, cleaning the classrooms and helping where needed, with the aim of returning to normality and continuing the school year.

The Department of Foreign Languages ​​was not far behind in this task and all the teachers got ready to do so, the young and the not so young, all working equally to recover our workplace. It is worth mentioning that many of our students, mainly those who live in the city, joined this work voluntarily. Here I leave some images.

In these last two images you can see how we had to put all the electronic equipment that we used in the career, such as televisions, computers and recorders, in the sun with the hope that they could still work, because the place where they were stored was leaked a lot and all the equipment got wet. The only place that did not suffer major damage was the department's teachers' quarters.

Back to school

Anyway, thanks to all the effort we made we were able to resume the current school year and today I am back and very happy to see my students again after so many days. It feels great to be back in front of the classroom teaching something that I am passionate about, English.

Here I leave a photo of my students, who are very respectful and make me enjoy teaching them, I love the fact that I can be part of their learning and contribute my grain of knowledge. Many of them are older than me, because this year I am working on the Course By Meeting, also known as the course for workers, which takes place every Saturday and is for people who work during the week and want to get their university degree.
