Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for Monday, the 16th day of October, 2023. The Super Eagles of Nigeria redeemed their image as try played Mozambique in their second match of this international break. The match had ended (2-3) in favour of Nigeria. This came after they had played out a (2-2) draw with Saudi Arabia on Saturday. That victory over the Mambas of Mozambique marked the Nigerian team’s first victory in a friendly game in five years!!!
Larry took time to watch that game. As the full time whistle was blown he felt relieved that the unwanted record was finally broken. Thereafter, he turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from France. He finds out that on this day in 1793, after the French Revolution began, agitators targeted Marie-Antoinette, the queen consort of Louis XVI, and guillotined her on this day in 1793, infuriated by her extravagance and attempts to save the monarchy.
From France, Larry moves over to the world of boxing. He finds out that on this day in 2003, László Papp, the first three-time Olympic boxing champion (he won gold medals in 1948, 1952, and 1956), died at the age of 77 in Budapest, Hungary.
From the world of boxing, Larry goes to the Vatican City. He finds out that on this day in 1978, Karol Józef Wojtyła of Poland was elected Pope; he took the name John Paul II and was the first non-Italian pontiff in 455 years.
From the Vatican City, Larry goes to China. He finds out that on this day in 1964, China, eager to enter the nuclear race, successfully detonated its first atomic weapon.
From China, Larry goes to the World War II trials. He finds out that on this day in 1946, ten of the twelve persons sentenced to death in the Nürnberg trials were executed, including Joachim von Ribbentrop and Ernst Kaltenbrunner.
From World War II trials, Larry moves to Pakistan. He finds out that on this day in 1951, Liaquat Ali Khan the first Prime Minister of Pakistan ( from 1947–1951) died in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from Afghanistan. He finds out that on this day in 1772, Aḥmad Shah Durrānī, also called Aḥmad Shah Abdālī, the founder of Afghanistan and the ruler of an empire that stretched from the Amu Darya (ancient Oxus River) to the Indian Ocean and from Khorsn into Kashmir, Punjab, and Sindh died in Toba Maʿrūf, Afghanistan.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
