About a year into my dad's retirement, that was his comment to me! That he had actually grown to have a busier schedule AFTER retiring than his full time job had given him. When he said this, he was giggling with glee - not frustrated! Why? Because though his schedule was busier, it was filled with things that he actually CHOSE to do, instead of being FORCED to do.
When I was younger, I naturally looked at work as something that took me away from "play". Therefore, I assumed that once I was old enough to have a career - all my play time would be over until I could retire. I'm not exactly sure when the notion was dispelled for me - but it certainly has been!
- Work is no longer the absence of play for me and ...
- I love being able to use my mind to build, create, and bring new concepts to life. No matter what form this work will take, I know that I'll never "retire". I'll just be transforming it into newer, more exciting versions of itself!
For my husband and myself, I'm fairly certain that season of our life will take us away from the United States. For us, we've always had a sense of wonder and discovery that lured us away from the places we've always known. We see ourselves moving to another country and experiencing different environments and cultures in our later years. As many "ex-pats" have discovered, this allows for our dollar to be stretched a bit more if we find a country that is more affordable than America. This, in and of itself, is a bit of a "retirement" plan since it lets us get more bang for our buck.
As far as what we expect for that season in our lives, I think it would actually look a lot like what it does now. Finding the best way to utilize our time for the most joy, love, peace and how to transmit that to those around us too! hehehe
But maybe when the 9-5 job is out of the way - those 8 hours can be more dedicated to the mission at hand! hehehe That's the plan anyway! What do you think? What are YOUR ideas on retiring???
