A Lie it's not, I Slept on the Rooftop of a High Rise Building!

The late 60s early 70s were the eras of the Hippies and Flower Children; slogans like Flower Power and Peace and Love were synonymous with freedom and kindness. The Woodstock music festival was held on a dairy farm outside New York and everyone wanted to be there!
We had to be satisfied with going to the movies to see the documentary movie; dressed up in tie-dye outfits, flowers in our hair, clothing embroidered with flowers, and jackets with leather fringes.

I was an avid reader; reading well into the night so needed glasses in high school and of course, they had to be round John Lennon glasses!

The slogan Flower Power of course was symbolic of passive resistance and peace, showing opposition to the Vietnam War.
The reason I'm reminding you of this is to set the scene of how the youth rebelled against the establishment back then.

My friends were all adventurous, but I always was the scaredy-cat.

The craziest of all my friends came up with the bright idea that we should have a sleepover on the beach and it would be a great adventure! Yep, back then it was still relatively safe, BUT...

There were about six of us; we all fibbed and told our Moms that we were sleeping over at our best friend's house after a night out at the club, or rather the movies as our Moms all believed ;)

We single gals had a great night out, none of us dating anyone at that stage, so we were free to ogle those blond surfers...but none of us struck it lucky, it was like we were invisible!

Anyway...we knew exactly where our safe sheltered spot would be on the beach, so walked there and settled for the night...or so we thought!

Trying to sleep on beach sand was not as cozy as our warm beds back at home, nor an adventure anymore, and everyone started complaining.
It was too late as there were no buses, nor could we call anyones's brother to fetch us, as there were no cell phones back then nor public telephone booths nearby, so we just had to try to get to sleep!

A long while later, we heard voices approaching and taking fright all jumped up and ran as fast as we could across the road to the safety of a block of flats!

Back then, there were no locked doors nor security guards at the entrances to those buildings. Thank goodness for that as we could take the lift up to the top floor; I think it was at least 20 floors high. The door to the roof was unlocked, and we settled down for the night!

Not the same building as back then, but we had a similar wall 'protecting' us from the elements.
No one could sleep however as it became colder and colder with the wind howling up there.

As soon as the sun rose the next morning, we gathered ourselves to sneak out of the building before the building supervisor came on duty.

I got the fright of my life as my John Lennon glasses were nowhere to be found on that rooftop and I started panicking; how was I going to explain this to Mom!

We went back to our beach hideout at the break of dawn, with everyone looking for my glasses, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack! We had to be careful in case someone steps on it, if it was still there, but the beach was still deserted, so it had to be somewhere!

Miracles do happen and my best friend found it so I was saved from having to tell Mom yet another fib!

So...this all really happened even though it sounds like a lie...

I did sleep on the roof of a 20 storey building, lost and found my glasses on the beach sand and I survived to tell the story some five decades later!

It's the truth, and the whole truth your honour!

This has been my ineligible entry for this week's Silver Bloggers' #bow, and I must add it was not easy to think of something for this topic, Tell us something about yourself that sounds like a lie, but it's actually the truth, hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed reminiscing about those crazy days.
