A special bow in memory of a beloved uncle - the many things I hold dear to my heart

Have you entered the exciting Silver Bloggers #bow contest with the awesome theme Memories of Things Dear to the Heart? You have until Monday 9 August, so get those thinking caps on and share some of yours with us.

My view on Hive contests and challenges is not about winning as such; it's the fact that your blog will be read, plus you're bound to meet kindred spirits, as much engagement takes place.

The prizes are a bonus of course and with this week's #bow I've added 20 Hive to the kitty, as our Silver Flower aka @fionasfavourites explained in #silverbloggers' awesome curation post where we're featuring some of our bloggers' posts. Take a peek at that and meet some new members and Hiveans as well.

Last week's #bow winner @galenkp, who cannot be considered for a prize consecutively, wrote a beautiful blog simply called Teddy.
Take a peek if you need some inspiration, but remember that you can interpret this theme in any which way you like, and that's what I'm doing today ;)

I've really been stumped as to what to write about, as I've been immensely blessed and have memories of MANY things dear to my heart!

I will list a couple of these and tell you a little more about the ones dearest to me.

So, those who know me also know that the kitchen is one of my favourite playgrounds, and I have a couple of vintage baking utensils which all have a special meaning as they came from special people who have played a big part in my life.

Then I admit to having a love affair with a good strong aromatic cup of plunger coffee which is even better if the beans have been freshly ground, but this Coffee Plunger is what gives me the most awesome kick-start to the day. Now that I am in semi-retirement that leisurely early morning cuppa still is the best so this plunger is very dear to me! Sadly it has to be replaced from time to time as the glass is fragile and bumps do happen so we always have a spare one on hand as it would be disastrous not having this beloved utensil on hand!

If my dear reliable old upgraded desktop computer could speak, you would be sitting in front of it for days on end as I've shared some of my deepest secrets with it.
My cellphone is another thing very very dear to my heart and is glued to my side at all times, so I could not even take a pic of it!

A very special uncle

The things most dear to my heart however are little gifts from my very special uncle who was not much older than me, as they are tangible reminders of him.
We had a special bond from the time I was born; he was so proud of his little niece but called me his sister and he really felt like a big brother!

I was spoiled with gifts every single time he visited, gave me this costume jewelry and the yellow-gold bracelet below with my name inscribed on it; a very special gift that he had made just for me, very dear to my heart as it reminds me of how he intuitively knew that even though I loved pretty things, I was not one for too much glitz and glamour!

Rulov had a huge influence on my life, was the kindest gentlest soul I have ever known; sadly that cost him his life in the end.
He was a super talented man who spent most of his career on stage as a dancer and ended his career as a wardrobe manager.
Of course he was the one who instilled in me that I never go anywhere if I'm not dressed for the occasion, had a fabulous sense of humour and used to make me laugh till my tummy hurt; that was almost daily as he called me most nights when he was living in Johannesburg.
He was a much beloved uncle, brother, friend and colleague to many.

What I remember most when I look at these special things that are immensely dear to me, is a man of integrity who had the gift to make everyone feel special and to see the funny side in most situations.
These gorgeous Babushka dolls are very special as he got me interested in the history of the last Russian Tsar and his family; left me a collection of fascinating books on the tragic end of that dynasty.

Finally, a poem written by a special friend of Rulov's, Lisanne Frewin, sums him up beautifully and I hold this very dear to my heart as well. A special bow to Lisanne for this!
