Congratulations and Celebrations!

Celebrations come in many forms, and being a Silver Blogger mine started many, many moons ago!

How these joyous occasions have changed over the years, but some things never change when it comes to celebrations - cares and worries are thrown out the window! Fun, laughter and the joy of being together for that special occasion still reigns!

Retro 70s party foods

Party foods, as well as presentations, changed over the years as fads came and went. Remember the days when Tupperware was the in-thing and you'd proudly bring food like fridge tarts and jell-ring mousses in them, plus everyone would share the leftovers and take it back home in those brightly coloured plastic containers;)
The centrepiece often was half an orange or a pineapple with little skewers of coloured pickled onions, cheese squares, viennas, olives etc. stuck into it; looked very festive indeed, just like hedgehogs!

Wedding celebrations of different cultures

It's always fascinated me how different cultures celebrate special occasions, especially weddings.
A traditional Christian wedding - my cousin's daughter was the bride, with her sister and her cousin, plus a friend, as the bridesmaids.
I could not find a pic of her and the bridegroom. All my other wedding photos are yellowed with age, but you get the gist when you see her outfit.
Then pics of the lavish wedding of Hindu friends' daughter, and our lastly Bongikosi's traditional Zulu wedding photos.
All celebrated very differently but all very special celebrations!

Birthdays

Always special are the birthday celebrations, especially when one reaches those milestones with a 0 behind it!
Here is Mom Lily at her 90th, and little Mia-Lily who had still not reached her first 0 birthday at that stage.
Both occasions had cupcakes and other sweet treats without which a birthday party just cannot do!

Family celebrations

As a child, the best times were when our family got together for Christmas and New Year's Eve parties at my Ouma's house, and then later at my aunt's.

Food and laughter always played a big part and one thing that still has not changed over the years is the Lemon Meringue Tarts and traditional South African Milk Tarts that still is an integral part of our family get-togethers! That job has been passed down from my Ouma to Mom Lily and now to me. I'd never hear the end of it if I arrived without at least a couple of milk tarts!

A visit to the family always turned into a celebration of laughter and catching up on the latest family scandals as we all have one or two naughty family members not so ;)

Fun in the Office

I was blessed to have met the most awesome friends throughout my working life, some of who I still see regularly and have become lifelong friends.
Office parties with one showing me and one of my old bosses who was nearing 90 at that stage, super-fit as he was a land surveyor which meant lots of walking in the fresh air finding and placing property beacons, and being a golfer as well kept him superfit. My retirement celebration and then a post-retirement get-together with my two best work buddies & Mom Lily!

Christmas celebrations

Food, glorious food; always way too much of it, but this menu also changed over the years. Many still do the traditional roast turkey & stuffing, but we tend to go for cold dishes, as it's the middle of summer here. My Ouma would turn in her grave if she saw our cold food, although maybe not, as she was a happy gal who kept up with the times and was no food snob!

The desserts are always my department as I have a terrible sweet tooth - good old-fashioned trifle still is popular, meringues topped with cream and berries, and of course, fruit mince pies without which Christmas just ain't Christmas!

I think the celebrations will stop right here, as I may just be tempting you too much!
I'm sure you'll all agree that food plays a big part in many celebrations.
That usually is my department as the kitchen is one of my playgrounds, but the real fun starts when friends and family get together and we all let our hair down!

This has been my non-eligible contribution towards this month's Silver Bloggers #bom Celebrations,
a very apt topic as we are celebrating our first birthday.

A big congratulations to my amazing team and to all our awesome members who support and help us with our growth, some with donations for which we are thankful, but the interactions and blogging into our community is vital and that is what keeps us ticking!

I tried to find out the original source of this image below which was shared on a really nice website for silvers; growingbolder.com.
I think many of us feel the same as these two, as the older we become, the older 'old' indeed becomes as we still know how to let our hair down!
