Scents and Aromas Tickle the Senses and Memories

Oranges and Lemons

Tiny little sparks of intense orange scent shooting up my nostrils when squeezing or zesting orange peel, bring back fond memories.
Those little bursts of scent seem to be shouting out...

Hey you, look at me now, you're going to be blown away by a flavour-burst from little old me!

Oranges of course are packed with Vitamin C, and Mom Lily made sure it was packed into our school lunch boxes during the flu season. I loved squeezing out orange juice by hand in an old glass orange squeezer, Mom also used to make the most delicious Lemonade with lemon rind floating in it for extra flavour.
Zesty Orange sauce cake was another favourite from my childhood days, something my aunty Marie used to make.

Magical scents of oranges and lemons are the best!

Cinnamon

Pancakes served with Cinnamon Sugar, Pumpkin Fritters rolled in... yes, you've guessed right...cinnamon-sugar, and Milk Tart, with a sprinkling of Cinnamon, all remind me of my Ouma, as these were her specialties.

Sugar and spice and all things nice sum up Cinnamon very well!

A Spicy Curry

Aromas to really tickle the senses start from the first step of making a curry - the popping of Jeera (Cumin) seeds, then the onions and garlic, tomatoes and curry spices - dhania (coriander) powder, jeera powder, garam masala (usually a mixture of cumin, coriander, nutmeg, pepper & cardamom), star anise, cinnamon bark, elachi (cardamom) seeds, turmeric and of course the hot masala.

A pucker aromatic curry is best made by someone of Indian descent; I use the exact same spices as my friend, but her curries taste out of this world; spicy hot, and aromatic! Mine is not too shabby though.

I know...I know...I always get carried away by the food...BUT one last aroma, and that is...

The smell of Homemade Bread baking

This reminds me so much of my Ouma and my Mom, as they both made their own bread. It was a lengthy process - kneading and wrapping it in a blanket to let it prove in a sunny spot, knocking it down, placing it in bread tins, and letting it rise again before it goes into the oven. I still enjoy the yeasty smell of the dough after it had proven.
The bread aromas waft through the house and all the way outside where my four brothers and their friends used to play rugby. I was a bookworm so would be inside. We all had to wait and allow the bread to rest before we could slice it; not easy and the temptation often got the better of us!

THE END

...of food that is, I'm not done yet!

A new School Suitcase and Stationary

A scent that I will never forget is that of a new school suitcase...those hard rectangular cases. I just loved the smell of that AND the smell of new school books.
Don't ask me why but it may just be that I really enjoyed my school years and was especially excited when going to school on the first day!
Nowadays those old suitcases are used as decor items, and will not smell the same as they did when it was brand new!

The scent of a baby dusted with baby powder

Of course not the scent of a soiled nappy LOL! Baby powder still smells so good and brings back many many happy memories of a time of wonderment when my sons were still little babes in arms.

I could go on and on till daybreak, but the feel-good smell of rain, freshly mown lawn, the ocean, a forest, a fire crackling in the fireplace or outdoors, a BBQ...oops now I'm back to food again...so...I'm going to end it right there!

All these scents evoke wonderful memories of people who came into my life for a season, and I'm thankful that there still are many who've stayed for the long run!
