The confidence of the sister in her brother to protect her all the time
The thread that a sister puts on his brother's wrist on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan may be small in terms of price, but the value is unmatched to any other relation. They spend major part of their life in one home and after marriage they usually get separated. But the feelings that they carry for each other has a life time commitment. And the same is reflected in this festival. Wherever the brother stays, he is supposed to come to sister's home to tie this sacred thread - throughout his entire life. And the sister always prays for the happy and long life, with the confidence that, the brother will always protect her. The brother usually gifts her with whatever he can.
I did not have a sister, and my wife did not have a brother. But God has blessed with a son and a daughter to see the celebration of this auspicious day. We really enjoy their relationship. They fight most of the times, but if we catch one of them, the other comes forward to protect. Here are some pictures of the celebration from this year, on 22nd August.
We try to teach them our traditions and culture as much as we can. These are the values, they will carry for their entire life and then teach the same to their family. My mother at the age of 70 wanted to go to tie the Rakhi to her brother and I accompanied her. Usually the brother comes to the sister's house, but given that my uncle has no one to bring him, we went there. It was a nice time spent to meet other family members. We spent few hours there and some delicious Kheer with sweets was the top attraction for me.
