This species of woodpecker is quite rare, and I don't see it often. As a rule, it is easiest to see it in late autumn and winter.
He looks rather unusual, unlike his fellow woodpeckers, he also has a completely different voice, a bit reminiscent of the voice of birds of prey. And yet, I have not seen him as part of mixed bird flocks. Only singly or in pairs.

And one day in late autumn I saw a great spotted woodpecker attack and drive away a gray woodpecker. They are usually more patient with other birds. But then I realized why these woodpeckers are so lonely.
