Tom Riddle (Harry Potter)
We all know that without a good villain, there are no good stories, and in the case of the Harry Potter franchise, we know all too well that it has the best villain of all.
Todos sabemos que sin un buen villano, no hay buenas historias, y en el caso de la franquicia Harry Potter, sabemos muy bien que tiene al mejor de todos los villanos.
Tom Sorvolo Riddle, better known as Lord Voldemort, is for me one of the best characters of the saga, with a compendium that gives him that title because his story and development is clear, deep and amazing, his personality is very well worked and reflected by his interpreters (Hero Fiennes, Frank Dillane and Ralph Fiennes).
Tom Marvolo Riddle, mejor conocido como Lord Voldemort, es para mi uno de los mejores personajes de la saga, con un compendio que le otorga ese título ya que su historia y desarrollo es claro, profundo y asombroso, su personalidad está muy bien trabajada y reflejada por sus interpretes (Hero Fiennes, Frank Dillane y Ralph Fiennes)
One of my favourite films (and book too) is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) directed by David Yates, and one of the reasons is because thanks to the "Pensieve" we can explore Voldemort's childhood, adolescence and youth before he actually called himself Voldemort. I must say that Hero Fiennes and Frank Dillane did a magnificent job of stepping into the shoes of such a character.
Una de mis películas preferidas (y libro también) es Harry Potter y el príncipe mestizo (2009) dirigida por David Yates, y una de las razones es porque gracias al Pensadero, podemos explorar la infancia, adolescencia y juventud de Voldemort, de hecho antes de hacerse llamar como tal. Debo decir que Hero Fiennes y Frank Dillane hicieron un trabajo magnífico al ponerse los zapatos de semejante personaje.
Hero Fiennes makes an 11 year old boy disturbing and even an adult afraid of him (very good work by the actor). The blank, expressionless stare and his disinterested demeanour makes Tom Riddle a prone psychopath or sociopath who gets what he wants by his own crude methods. However, he's a child at the end of the day, he was impulsive and petulant, an attitude he learned to repress and not show thanks to Dumbledore, and which in essence made him more dangerous.
Hero Fiennes hace que un niño de apenas 11 años, se vuelva inquietante y que hasta un adulto le tema (muy buen trabajo del actor). La mirada inexpresiva y vacía además de su comportamiento desinteresado por lo que lo rodea, vuelve a Tom Riddle un propenso psicópata o sociópata que consigue lo que quiere con sus propios métodos burdos. Sin embargo, como niño al fin, era impulsivo y majadero, actitud que aprendió a reprimir y no mostrar gracias a Dumbledore y lo que en esencia lo volvió más peligroso.
On the other hand, Frank Dillane does an excellent job playing the teenage version of Voldemort, a different side comes through. The look of teenage Tom Riddle has more "warmth" and he even comes across as respectful, flattering and curious. He didn't show his dark side again because since meeting Dumbledore he knew that to get what he wanted he could not be so obvious, and that by being a nice person, he would get much more from others. Tom Riddle had learned how to manipulate. If you mix unparalleled cunning and intelligence with psychopathic or sociopathic behaviour, you get a master of hoax who gets what he wants by manipulation, or by force when his subtle and elegant methods have no effect on people, or when he simply doesn't consider his goals worth his effort.
Por otra parte, Frank Dillane hace un trabajo excelso interpretando la versión adolescente de Voldemort, una faceta diferente se hace notar. La mirada de Tom Riddle adolescente tiene más "calidez" e incluso se muestra respetuoso, halagador y curioso. No volvió a mostrar su lado oscuro porque desde que conoció a Dumbledore supo que para conseguir lo que quería no podía ser tan evidente, y que siendo una persona agradable, conseguiría mucho más de los otros. Tom Riddle había aprendido a manipular. Si mezclas la astucia e inteligencia sin igual con un comportamiento psicópata o sociópata, dará como resultado a un maestro del engaño que consigue lo que quiere bajo manipulación, o por la fuerza cuando sus métodos sutiles y elegantes no surten efecto en las personas, o cuando simplemente no considera que sus objetivos merezcan su esfuerzo.
Remember that manipulation takes months or even years, which in turn demands patience and effort, effort that Tom was not about to invest in someone unimportant to him. Frank Dillane's performance captured the most important moment in the villain's life, as he was just the link between the disturbing, vengeful, inexperienced child and the monster he became, adept at manipulating and moving chips. Frank played with the "light" and darkness of the character, giving us certain seconds of disturbing glances between those elegant expressions and small smiles that were meant to be friendly.
Recordemos que la manipulación requiere meses o incluso años lo que a su vez demanda paciencia y esfuerzo, esfuerzo que Tom no iba a invertir en alguien poco importante para él. Ronald Weasley (Harry Potter)
Another of my favourite characters is the youngest of the Weasley boys and one who is quite underrated, yes, I'm talking about Ron Weasley. Loved by some and hated by others, Ron is a typical boy who has grown up in the shadow of his older brothers and his best friend who is a celebrity, which is why Ron tends to be a rather insecure and jealous boy. He is often tested and he feels jealous of his best friend, Harry, because he is the one who gets everyone's attention.
Otro de mis personajes preferidos es el más pequeño de los varones Weasley, y el cuál está bastante infravalorado, sí, hablo de Ron Weasley. Amado por unos, odiado por otros, Ron es el típico chico que ha crecido a la sombra de sus hermanos mayores y de su mejor amigo que es una celebridad, es por eso que Ronald tiende a ser un muchacho bastante inseguro y además celoso. Muchas veces es puesto a prueba y siente celos de su mejor amigo, Harry, puesto a que es éste quien se lleva la atención de todo el mundo.
Ronald tends to compare himself to the people around him (usual behaviour for people with self-esteem problems) and constantly feels pressured by the achievements of his siblings, and the qualities possessed by others that he believes he doesn't possess, such as Hermione's intelligence, Harry's Quidditch talent, or Comac Mclagglen's money and influence. Despite Ronald's belief that he is expendable and of little value, he has contributed a great deal to the Golden Trio's plans.
Ronald tiende a compararse con las personas que le rodean (comportamiento usual en personas con problemas de autoestima) constantemente se siente presionado por los logros de sus hermanos, y las cualidades que poseen los demás y que él cree no poseer como la inteligencia de Hermione, el talento para el Quidditch de Harry, o el dinero e influencias de Comac Mclagglen. Pese a que Ronald se cree prescindible y poco valioso, ha aportado bastante al trío de oro en sus planes.
In first year he helped Harry save Hermione from the troll and also did the whole magical chess game, sacrificing himself so that his two friends could advance (in the film so that Harry could do it), in second year, he accompanied Harry to the dark forest to talk to Aragog, despite his phobia of spiders (all of us who have a phobia understand the great value of Ron's action), He also helps Harry with part of his trials in the Triwizard Tournament, even trying to warn him about the dragons despite being angry with Harry, in the fifth year he was part of the boys who accompanied Harry to the Ministry of Magic, putting his life at risk. His most important contribution was to accompany Harry during the hard times in the search for Horocruxes in which he contributed a lot of information about the Ministry, the magical society and so on, things that Hermione and Harry didn't know because of their Muggle and half-blood backgrounds respectively.
En primer año ayudó a Harry a salvar a Hermione del troll y además hizo todo el juego de ajedrez mágico, sacrificándose para que sus dos amigos pudiesen avanzar (en la película para que Harry lo hiciera), en segundo año, acompañó a Harry al bosque oscuro para hablar con Aragog, pese a su fobia a las arañas (todos los que poseemos alguna fobia entendemos el valor tan grande de la acción de Ron) también ayuda a Harry con parte de sus pruebas en el torneo de los tres magos, incluso intentando avisarle sobre los dragones pese a estar enojado con Harry, en el quinto curso formó parte de los chicos que acompañaron a Harry al ministerio de magia poniendo en riesgo su vida. Su contribución más importante fue acompañar a Harry durante los tiempos duros en la búsqueda de Horocruxes, en la cuál aportó mucha información sobre el ministerio, la sociedad mágica y demás, cosas que Hermione y Harry no sabían por su procedencia muggle y mestiza respectivamente.
But contributions aside, really the most important thing that Ronald Weasley reflects as a character is his nobility, kindness and friendship. No matter what, he always stayed at Hogwarts at Christmas (being able to go home with his parents and siblings) just so Harry wouldn't be alone, or invited him to spend the holidays with him at his house where his whole family treated Harry as their own son. He defended Harry and Hermione whenever he had the chance and always showed loyalty to his ideals and friends, that's why he is one of my favourite characters.
Pero dejando de lado sus contribuciones, en verdad lo más importante que refleja Ronald Weasley como personaje es su nobleza, bondad y amistad. Siempre sin importar que, está al dado de sus mejores amigos, se quedaba en Hogwarts las navidades (pudiendo ir a casa con sus padres y hermanos) solo para que Harry no estuviese solo, o lo invitaba a pasar las vacaciones con él en su casa donde toda su familia trataba a Harry como otro hijo más. Defendió a Harry y Hermione siempre que tenía oportunidad y siempre mostró fidelidad a sus ideales y amigos, es por eso que es uno de mis personajes preferidos.
